Efficiency of water application of irrigation systems based on microsprinkling in banana plantations

Abstract: Further food production may be limited by the reduced availability of water resources. Since irrigated agriculture is the productive sector that presents a higher demand of water, this sector has been under intense pressure in order to ensure food production with improved efficiency of water use. This study aimed to use the Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) technique to measure percolation losses and to determine water application efficiency of banana (Musa spp.) trees using microsprinkler irrigation systems. “…This may lead to uncertainties in the estimation of ET since the soil moisture variation in the crop root zone is not fully controlled. There is a wide variation in the number of points used to monitor soil moisture in studies for determining the depletion of soil water storage when estimating evapotranspiration or crop water extraction (Andreu et al, 1997;Green and Clothier, 1995;Wu et al, 1999;Green and Clothier, 1999;Palomo et al, 2002;Coelho et al, 2007;Silva et al, 2009b;Silva et al, 2013).…”

“…Water is the most important substance on earth due to its use and applications in our daily life [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]. Currently, more than 45 potential models have been proposed to study and produce all different properties of real water.…”

“…The ratio between the amount of water retained in the root zone of the plant and the amount of irrigation water supplied is the water use efficiency of any crop. Therefore, the necessity of optimal use of water is very important because it requires the largest share of water [9]. Evaluating the performance of irrigation illustrates a practical education to stakeholders on how things work and what the system can do effectively to improve the performance of irrigation systems.…”
