Mass-rearing of Mediterranean fruit fly using low-cost yeast products produced in Brazil

Abstract: Ceratitis capitata is one of the most important pests of fruits for exportation, and Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) has been the most efficient and environmental friendly technique used to control fruit fly populations around the world. A key goal in achieving a successful SIT program is a mass rearing system producing high quality insects at low cost. Providing adults with an artificial diet containing hydrolysed protein has been the major obstacle for bio-production facilities in Brazil, because it is expens… Show more

“…The colonies were maintained in rectangular cages (40 × 20 × 22 cm) at 25 ± 1 °C, 70 ± 10% r.h., and L12:D12 photoperiod. After fly emergence, water and an adult diet based on hydrolyzed protein and sugar (1:3) (Silva Neto et al., ) were offered ad libitum. For all experiments, adults were separated at emergence by sex and were placed in cages under the same conditions as the colonies.…”

“…In the 26 th generation the imported yeast was replaced by a local one, Bionis YE MF® (Morelli et al, 2012;Silva Neto et al, 2012). Below the food station there was also a water supply (deionized water and sodium benzoate solution at 0.03 % to avoid fungal growth), which was closed but had a single longitudinal gap at the top through which a filter paper allowed access to water.…”

“…This procedure ensured that insects were virgin for the experiments. The adults were fed with a solid diet of sugar and hydrolyzed yeast (Biones Quatá, São Paulo, Brazil) at ratio 3:1 (Silva-Neto et al 2012) and filtered water ad libitum.…”
