Abstract: The wild rice, Zizania latifolia Turcz, used to be one of the important aquatic vegetables cultivated in China. Recently, the golden apple snail -GAS (Pomacea canaliculata (Lamarck)) was found to be a major invasive pest attacking Z. latifolia. To control efficiently GAS, predation by the Chinese soft-shelled turtles (Pelodiscus sinensis) on GAS was evaluated in laboratory and field trials. P. sinensis had a strong predatory capacity and selectivity for GAS both in laboratory and field conditions. All the size… Show more

“…These findings should be conducive to a more rational appraisal of the biocontrol efficiency of different predators on P . canaliculata , since most studies have only considered the direct predation effects imposed on snails by predators [ 18 , 30 , 31 ].…”

“…Experiments were conducted in a greenhouse on the campus of South China Agricultural University. We implemented three treatments: (1) the control treatment with soil only (CK); (2) soil amended with GAS residues ( i.e ., shell and meat) (SR); and (3) soil amended with lime (SL). Each treatment had six levels of amendment: 0.5, 1, 2.5, 25, 50, and 100 g kg -1 .…”

“…Invasive golden apple snails (GAS) Pomacea canaliculata (Lamarck ) have become a serious pest for agricultural production in Asia (1). A series of control methods have been developed (2, 3); the most widely used is chemical control by molluscicides (4), which, could harm environmental and human health (5). A better method for sustainable management is urgently needed, potentially by using them to produce commercial products.…”

“…The invasive golden apple snail (GAS), Pomacea canaliculata , has become a serious problem for agricultural production in Southeast Asia 11 . A series of control methods have been developed 12 , 13 and the most widely used method is chemical control by molluscicides 14 , which may unintentionally endanger environmental quality and human health 15 . Although physical and biological control methods such as manual collection or raising ducks in the paddy fields were also proposed 16 , 17 , the low effectiveness or high cost of these methods limited the possibility for their practical application.…”
