Abstract: Coffee (Coffea arabica) plants show a positive relationship between stomatal closure and formation and accumulation of H 2 O 2 . However, for coffee plants under water restriction such relationship has never been studied. The objective of the present study was evaluate the stomatal movement and the antioxidant capacity of coffee seedlings under different water regimes. Eight months old coffee seedlings of cv. Catuaí IAC 99 were submitted to field capacity, gradual and total suspension of irrigation during a pe… Show more

“…For both species, in fact, the values of the water potential were very low at 10% WC, although the differences, compared to the control, were clearly lower for Viburnum than for Polygala, confirming that the latter has a poor tolerance to water deficit. The reduction of leaf water potential is a frequent response to water stress, also in drought-tolerant plants [76]. The capacity to maintain a high leaf water potential at 40% WC showed that the plants did not experience water limitation.…”

“…Other studies have also reported an increase in the activity of antioxidant enzymes, especially SOD, CAT and APX, due to the drought, as Olea europaea [27], Carapa guianensis [28] and Coffea arabica plants [29], featuring an efficient defense system against ROS produced in these conditions.…”

“…Changes in antioxidant mechanisms correlate the ability to defend against different stresses. Under water deficit conditions, important changes in the photosynthetic and antioxidant metabolism of Coffea arabica plants have been recorded (Deuner et al, 2011).…”
