An annotated list of ornamentals naturally found infected by Brevipalpus mite-transmitted viruses

Abstract: The first cases of ornamental plants found infected by Brevipalpus transmitted viruses (BTV) were described in the 1990's from the region of Piracicaba, State of São Paulo, Brazil; subsequent cases were from other regions in the country and other American countries. Currently, 37 ornamental plant species (for the sake of simplicity, orchids being considered as a single species), belonging to 18 families of dicotyledons, have been reported hosting BTV. Because of the non systemic type of infection of these viru… Show more

“…The importance of flat mites as agricultural pests has increased significantly over the past 40 years mainly because of their association with plant viruses and their increasingly obvious quarantine importance (Ochoa et al 1994;Childers & Derrick 2003;Gerson 2008;Kitajima et al 2010;Rodrigues & Childers 2013;.…”

“…As a group, BTV affect, at least, 40 plant species ranging from major crops such as citrus and coffee, to economically important cultivated plants such as orchids and passion fruit, and other less significant ornamentals (Bastianel et al, 2010;Kitajima et al, 2010;Ramalho et al, 2014). The BTV-caused citrus leprosis is the main viral disease affecting citrus production in Brazil and is acknowledged to be re-emergent in the Americas (Roy et al, 2015).…”

“…Although they feed on many crops, the main damage is indirect via their transmission of phytoviruses (Childers and Derrick 2003;Moraes and Flechtmann 2008;Bastianel et al 2010). These mites transmit several viruses to ornamental plants [orchid fleck virus (OFV); Cestrum ringspot virus (CeRSV); Hibiscus greenspot virus (HGSV); Bastianel et al 2006;Kitaijma et al 2010;Melzer et al 2013] and perennial crops [passionfruit greenspot virus (PFGSV); coffee ringspot virus (CoRSV); Citrus leprosis virus C (CiLV-C); citrus leprosis virus cytoplasmic type 2; Chagas et al 2003;Rodrigues et al 2003;Kitajima et al 2003;Locali-Fabris et al 2006;Roy et al 2013]. …”
