Abstract: Plants of Capsicum annuum cv. Magali R, resistant to Pepper yellow mosaic virus (PepYMV), which showed severe yellow mosaic, leaf malformation and stunting were observed during the 2003/04 growing season in Lins, São Paulo State, Brazil. Potyvirus-like particles observed in leaf sap from infected plants under the electron microscope reacted with an antiserum against PepYMV in PTA-ELISA. In addition to C. annuum cv. Magali R, this potyvirus also infected systemically the resistant C. annuum cv. Rubia R. The nuc… Show more

“…However, Gioria et al (2009) found a break in resistance to PepYMV in commercial plantations with cultivar Magali R, bearer of the gene Pvr 4, in the State of São Paulo, Brazil. Thus, the search for new sources of resistance to PepYMV and subsequent determination of genetic control are essential for breeding programs aimed at releasing sweet and chili pepper cultivars (Juhász et al, 2008).…”

“…Heavy losses were associated with the presence of this virus in sweet pepper until the introduction of commercial sweet pepper hybrids probably containing the Pvr4 gene. These hybrids were resistant to PVY pathotypes 0, 1 and 1,2 and PepYMV but in 2003/04 breakdown of resistance against PepYMV was observed in Brazil (Gioria et al 2009). …”

“…1). The PepYMV-Lins isolate, able to breakdown Magali R and Rubia R hybrids (Gioria et al 2009) has the capacity to overcome pvr2 1 , pvr2 2 and pvr2 3 present on Puerto Rico Wonder, but not CM-334 which besides being homozygous for pvr2 3 has additionally Pvr4 that limits the infection by this isolate (Table 1).…”

“…Consequently, national breeding programs for Capsicum spp have conducted studies to search for resistance sources in germplasm banks (Bento et al, 2009). Genetic resources that are resistant to PepYMV in Capsicum have been reported for peppers in Brazil (Nascimento et al, 2007;Gioria et al, 2009;Bento et al, 2009;Gonçalves et al, 2011). However, in the literature, little information is available regarding Capsicum baccatum resistance to PepYMV.…”
