Abstract: The occurrence of somaclonal variation is described in various cultures of agronomic interest. Such variation can be of benefit in the development of new flower varieties. In this study, the occurrence of somaclonal variation in micropropagated changes of Heliconia bihai cv. Lobster Claw I was investigated. Stem apexes were introduced in MS culture media with the addition of 2.5 mg L -1 of benzylaminopure (BAP) and 500 mg L -1 of sodium cefotaxime. After selecting the apex stem, it was subcultivated in MS medi… Show more

“…Most accessions showed no variation in these traits, allowing to restrict the analysis to a few individuals per accession. Moreover, the plants originating from UFRGS (coded as V) are clones, whose only source of variation is somaclonal, thereby, further reducing the possibility of variation within accessions (Rodrigues, 2008;Majesky et al, 2015). In the plant seeds obtained from the USDA (coded as N), on the other hand, some level of variation within accessions can be expected, since apomixis is facultative in most tetraploids of the genus Paspalum (Sartor et al, 2011), and a degree of genetic diversity is therefore possible in apomictic Paspalum species (Sartor et al, 2013;Majesky et al, 2015).…”

“…It should also be noted that the use of very high concentrations of cytokinins could encourage the occurrence of somaclonal variation in vitro, as described in Heliconia bihai cv. Lobster Claw by Rodrigues (2008).…”

“…Fast and repeated cell divisions could induce somaclonal variation through changes in chromosome numbers and rearrangements, DNA methylations, and point mutations (Kaeppler et al, 1998;Kumar and Mathur, 2004). Frequency of somaclonal variation correlated with the length of culturing period (Bouman and de Klerk, 1997;Rodrigues, 2008;Valledor et al, 2007) and this correlation was confirmed in Picea mariana and P. glauca (Tremblay et al, 1999), Asparagus officinalis (Pontaroli and Camadro, 2005), Dieffenbachia (Shen et al, 2007), and wheat (Mahmood et al, 2012a).…”
