Interactions between diazotrophic bacteria and mycorrhizal fungus in maize genotypes

Abstract: Some diazotrophic bacteria can fix nitrogen biologically in gramineous host plants. Generally, gramineous plants are also associated with mycorrhizal fungi, that can improve mainly plant P uptake. Among the factors affecting plant-microbe interactions, the plant genotype plays an important role. This study evaluates the effect of diazotrophic bacteria and an arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus (AMF), on five genotypes of maize (Zea mays L.), in relation to plant biomass, shoot N and P concentrations, and fine root m… Show more

“…However, the P accumulation (Figure 2 and Table 3) was not significant (p > 0.05) among treatments, showing that a lower P concentration was likely due to the "dilution" effect, which is confirmed by the higher shoot dry matter production observed for the 60 % CaSiO 3 treatment (Figure 1). For example, when plant production increases, the "dilution" effect for some nutrients can occur (Crusciol et al, 2008;Marschner, 1995;Miyauchi at al., 2008), which is the reduction of their concentration in the tissue without an alteration in the absorbed quantity. Still, the concentration of P in the plants cultivated on LVAd-1 and LVAd-2 were not different either among treatments.…”

“…Analysis of variance (ANOVA) is an omnipresent approach towards analyzing various designs in agricultural, biological, ecological and environmental studies (see for example, in the following recent Scientia Agricola issue: Caires et al, 2008;Crusciol et al, 2008;Cruz & Cicero, 2008;Cruz et al, 2008;Ferreira et al, 2008;Guimarães et al, 2008;Miyauchi et al, 2008;Morgado & Willey, 2008;Oviedo et al, 2008;Santos et al, 2008;Soares et al, 2008;Vieira et al, 2008;Yamamoto et al, 2008). Among these designs, of course, is the most basic, one-way design.…”
