Sodium-affected alfisols of the agreste region, state of Paraíba, Brazil, as known by potter-farmers and agronomists

Abstract: Decisions and practical attitudes of land use and management adopted by rural populations are, to a great extent, based on local soil knowledge. This study was performed to describe and analyze chemical, physical and morphological characteristics of sodium-affected Alfisols employed in traditional pottery; and to compare, through statistical analysis, pedogenetical horizons and soil layers, as recognized in soil profiles by professional researchers and potterfarmers, respectively. Fieldwork was performed in Ch… Show more

“…All the studied soils were eutrophic, with a clear contribution of Ca 2+ and Mg 2+ in all the profiles, corroborating the results of Corrêa et al (2003), Alves et al (2005Alves et al ( , 2007, Galindo et al (2008) and Parahyba et al (2010). Profile 1 had the lowest base saturation (V) among the studied profiles, possibly due to the high rainfall in this region.…”

“…Field activities were undertaken in three stages, using the methods and techniques described by Alves et al (2005Alves et al ( , 2007. During the first phase, non-directive interviews were performed to gather information related to pottery production and other uses of soil material, using the "data-generating method" (Posey, 1986a).…”

“…Queiroz (1985) reported that the B horizon of a sodium-affected Alfisol was locally known as "barro de loiça" (pottery clay) in Vale do Acaraú (Ceará), while Alves et al (2007) noted that the principal soil material used for making pottery in Chã da Pia (in the Agreste region of Paraíba State) were also extracted from soils with these characteristics.…”
