Abstract: Information about the land cover of a region it is a key information for several purposes. This paper aimed to elaborate land-cover maps using digital satellite images obtained in 1997 from seven watersheds (Piracicaba, Moji-Guaçu, Alto Paranapanema, Turvo Aguapeí, Peixe, and São José dos Dourados) located in the State of São Paulo, southeastern Brazil. Additionaly, this study evaluated the relationship between land-cover and slopes of the terrain of the seven watersheds. A third objective was to estimate the … Show more

“…The climate is hot and tropical, with maximum temperatures near 32°C, minimum temperatures near 13°C, and annual rainfall between 1,300 and 1,800 mm (Silva et al, 2007). The region has a well-defined dry period with lower rainfall between June and August, and a wet period with higher rainfall between December and January (Instituto de Pesquisas Tecnológicas do Estado de São Paulo (IPT), 1999).…”

“…This study was carried out using a large database (91 streams) in the northwest area of the state of São Paulo in southeast Brazil, a region that was originally covered by Semideciduous Seasonal Forest (Silva et al, 2007). Intensive deforestation in this region began in the second half of the nineteenth century (Monbeig, 1998), with the remaining 4% of the original vegetation coverage (Nalon et al, 2008) distributed in small fragments (Silva et al, 2007). As a result, there is a clear gradient of physical habitat integrity, which is expected to influence the structure and composition of fish communities (Casatti et al, 2009).…”

“…Se atualmente já é notável o déficit de proteção nas áreas de proteção permanente (vide Silva et al 2007a), com a aprovação da nova lei, esse déficit certamente será ampliado. Isso afetaria a grande maioria dos cursos d'água brasileiros e traria grandes prejuízos em termos de perdas de diversidade local e regional, http://www.biotaneotropica.org.br/v10n4/pt/abstract?article+bn00310042010 http://www.biotaneotropica.org.br…”

“…In a recent paper in Conservation Biology, although acknowledging the relevance of production of knowledge on biodiversity, he argued that biological studies are often of reduced effect on restraining harmful natural-resource development and that effective solutions are generally related to economic changes and adoption of alternative land uses (Valladares-Pádua, 2006). Interestingly, this Special Issue brings two papers that discuss ecological consequences of land use changes (Silva et al, 2007a;2007c). …”
