Feeding preferences of Microtheca punctigera (Achard) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) for some Brassicaceae plants in multiple-choice assays

Abstract: Host plant feeding preference is important basic information for the development of insect management strategies. Multiple-choice feeding preference assays were conducted in the laboratory for the chrysomelid beetle, Microtheca punctigera (Achard). Feeding was assessed 72 h after onset of experiments. With one larva per Petri dish, food items comprised watercress, Nasturtium officinale L., arugula, Eruca sativa L., mustard, Brassica juncea Cosson, Chinese cabbage, B. pekinensis (Lour.) Rupr. and wild radish (R… Show more

“…Due to lack of independence of treatments in free-choice tests, the 101 genotypes in the free-choice test for oviposition and the 10 selected genotypes in the free-choice test for adult preference were ranked within block/replication, from one (= least preferred) to the highest preferred, depending on the number of genotypes tested (Menezes et al, 2005). The sum of the ranks obtained for each genotype in relation to possible maximal ranking (101 or 10) was calculated.…”

“…(Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) are insect pests primarily related to Brassicaceae crops and its occurrence is reported from South America, where they are indigenous, to southeastern United States, especially Microtheca ochroloma Stal, 1860 and Microtheca semilaevis Stal, 1860 (Manrique et al, 2010). In Brazil these species are found in different Brassicaceae crops (Menezes Júnior et al, 2005;Farinha et al, 2009;Poncio et al, 2010) and their presence commonly results in severe defoliation, due to the feeding habits of both larvae and adults, which are based on consumption of leaf tissue. This makes Microtheca spp.…”
