Calibration of cardy-ion meters to measure nutrient concentrations in soil solution an in plant sap

Abstract: Fertigation management requires rapid and accurate methods to determine nutrient concentrations in soil solution and in plant sap. This study was developed to evaluate the performance of cardy-ion meters (CIM) for the determinations of NO 3 -, K + and Na + concentrations in soil solution and tomato plant sap, for fertigation management purposes. Tomato was cultivated in a greenhouse with different levels of N, K and Na in the irrigation water. Soil solution was collected by suction at the 15 cm depth with poro… Show more

“…These results indicate that the sap assessed by Cardy can be used to estimate the N content in the plant. Folegatti et al (2005) observed that the nitrate levels measured in the leaf sap showed a good correlation with the total N content measured in dry matter in tomato plants.…”

“…Regarding the K + content in plant tissue, it was found that the values were higher in the EC of 3.5 dS m -1 , with further reduction (Figure 2C and D). Folegatti et al (2005) reported high correlation between the nitrate and the potassium measured using Cardy and the standard laboratory method, in evaluation of tomato plants, noting that the use of Cardy is appropriate to evaluate the ionic concentration in soil solution, providing rapid and precise measurements for the fertigation management.…”

“…The Soil Plant Analysis Development (SPAD) value of leaves at different positions on the stem from plants grown in conventional and bokashi hydroponics was obtained with a Minolta SPAD 502 chlorophyll meter (Konica Minolta Sensing Inc., Tokyo, Japan). The readings were obtained from 5 different conventionally and bokashi grown plants [ 41 ].…”

“…Além disso, se calculou que esses íons representavam entre aproximadamente 30 e 85% do total de sais dissolvidos na solução extraída no solo (TDS ≈ CE.0,54; USSLS, 1954). Obtiveram-se as concentrações de Na + , K + e NO 3com medidor de íon compacto Horiba ® C-122, C-131 e C-141 calibrados, metodologia validada por Folegatti et al (2005).…”
