Probabilistic tools for assessment of pest resistance risk associated to insecticidal transgenic crops

Abstract: One of the main risks associated to transgenic crops expressing Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) toxins is the evolution of pest resistance. The adoption of Bt crops requires environmental risk assessment that includes resistance risk estimation, useful for definition of resistance management strategies aiming to delay resistance evolution. In this context, resistance risk is defined as the probability of the Bt toxin resistance allele frequency (RFreq) exceeding a critical value (CriticalFreq). Mathematical simu… Show more

“…Thus, the marginal distribution for each data series remains unchanged, but the correlations among the series are adjusted. The Iman and Conover (1982) method has been employed in a variety of practical applications; for example, see Maia and Neto (2004), Brus and Jansen (2004), and Wu and Tsang (2004).…”

“…However, prior to the evolution of field resistance, the assumptions and predictions of these resistance management strategies can only be tested via lab selection of resistant strains. Laboratory‐selected resistant strains offer an opportunity to assess resistance inheritance, determine the mechanism of resistance, estimate the resistance allele frequency, evaluate fitness costs, develop molecular diagnostics, test models to predict resistance evolution and refine the current resistance management strategies. In this study we selected a Vip3Aa20‐resistant S. frugiperda strain from a field population by using a F 2 screening method .…”
