Abstract: Information regarding the relationship between laboratory seed vigor testing and seedling field emergence is very important to estimate seed performance after sowing and help producers adopt the best procedures to improve stand establishment. The objective of the present study was to relate accelerated aging (AA) test results to soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merrill] seedling field emergence results based on data obtained over three agricultural years. The following evaluations were made: seed water content, stand… Show more

“…Regarding the study of seed vigor, the accelerated aging and tetrazolium tests stand out among the others because they generally present a correlation with emergence of seedlings in field, as reported by França-Neto et al (2003). Torres et al (2004) showed that accelerated aging tests and field seedling emergence were significant with correlation coefficients between 0.50 and 0.83 for seedling emergence. In this study, the correlation data between accelerated aging tests and seedling emergence changed from 0.59 to 0.84 , and these data confirmed the results previously reported (Tables 1 and 2).…”

“…The higher field emergence of land races may be due to the smaller seed size associated with slow deterioration with respect to the large seeded improved varieties. Substantial differences in field emergence means within years (crop seasons) and within sowing date [10]. The interaction between DxV indicated that Kulat brown, Kulat white and Mothi showed gradual decrease in field emergence when sowing was delayed from April to July.…”

“…Measures of seed vigor on soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merril) showed that this evaluation related better to emergence in the field under stress condition than did the results from the standard germination test [2]. Many researchers have concluded significant correlation coefficients between laboratory results concerning evaluations of physiological potential (standard germination tests) and field emergence [3]. Many seeds germinate well under ideal laboratory conditions whereas they may fail to emerge successfully in the field [4].…”

“…The biochemical and physiological deterioration during seed ageing has been studied mostly under accelerated ageing conditions using high temperature and high seed water content (McDonald 1999, Hsu et al, 2003. Seed physiological quality has been routinely evaluated by the standard germination test, whose results are considered as reliable in terms of practicality and reproducibility (Torres et al, 2004). Under these circumstance it is very much necessary to predict the relative storability of different lots through accelerated ageing technique which helps the seed keepers or seed companies or organisations dealing with seed in taking certain management decisions regarding which seed lot need to be retained and which one need to be disposed off to the market immediately with minimum seed certification standards.…”
