Abstract: Coffee husk and coffee pulp are coffee processing by-products. Coffee husk is obtained when harvested coffee is processed by the dry method, and coffee pulp is produced by the wet method. In Brazil, coffee is usually processed by the dry method, therefore an expressive amount of husk is obtained every year. Some of the husk is used as organic fertilizer but, other applications are very limited, mainly because it is a bulky product. The presence of tannins and caffeine diminish acceptability and palatability of… Show more

“…Channelling these wastes into rivers and lakes have negative effects on marine organisms (Gibson et al, 2009;Ibrahim et al, 2015b;White and Rasmussen, 1998). Even though these wastes are enrich with macromolecules such as proteins and carbohydrates, they cannot be used to feed animals due to the presence of toxic compounds such as caffeine, theobromine and theophylline (Ahmad et al, 2015;Ibrahim et al, 2015b;Mazzafera, 2002;Pandey et al, 2000).…”

“…Weight gain, feed intake, and feed efficiency have been evaluated in pigs (Barrueta et al, 2000), sheep (Furuscho Garcia et al, 2000), and fish (Bautista et al, 2005), proving that it is possible to use it, although the amount used should be limited because of the presence of certain antinutritional factors such as caffeine and tannins. Different methods have been used to reduce the caffeine content (Mazzafera, 2002;Tagliari et al, 2003;Orozco et al, 2008); however, its application has been difficult due to the large amounts of pulp generated by coffee cherry pulping.…”
