Genetic correlation between traits in the ESALQ-PB1 maize population divergently selected for tassel size and ear height

Abstract: Full-sib and selfed (S1) progenies were obtained from sub-populations of ESALQ-PB1, divergently selected for tassel size (T+ and T-) and ear height (E+ and E-), and used for estimating genetic and phenotypic correlation coefficients between traits. The analyzed traits were: EW- total ear weight (g/plant), PH- plant height (cm), EH- ear height (cm), TB- tassel branch number and TL- tassel length. The highest genetic (rG) and phenotypic (rF) correlation was observed for the combination PH x EH, as expected, with… Show more

“…Correlation of TB and TW were positive and low (r A between 0.02 and 0.22) with the yield traits and higher (r A between 0.19 and 0.40) with EL. Both additive and phenotypic correlation between TW and TL was around 0.22, which are very close to the genetic correlation (0.232) reported by Farias Neto & Miranda Filho (2001).…”

“…PH and EH were positively correlated to tassel traits with r A varying from 0.10 (EH.TL) to 0.44 (EH.TB). Also are reported positive genetic and phenotypic correlations between PH and EH with tassel traits (TB and TL) in the range of 0.135 to 0.438 (Farias Neto & Miranda Filho, 2001). For the tassel traits (Table 5) the highest correlation was for TB.TW (r A = 0.63).…”

“…There is a positive association between taller plants and increased number of days to flower, but with magnitude values that allow the selection of plants with higher yield, small height and number of days to flower. With the exception of the trait days to flower, the correlations observed in landraces within family farm systems are the same presented in several other reports (Lemos et al, 1992, González et al, 1994Hallauer and Miranda Filho, 1995;Farias Neto and Miranda Filho, 2001;Silva et al, 2001;Saleh et al, 2002;Daros et al, 2004;Santos et al, 2005;Andrade and Miranda Filho, 2008), but with different magnitudes in some cases.…”

“…), v.67, n.6, p.685-691, November/December 2010 fore, the selection for another trait may result in indirect response in the low heritable trait, provided the following conditions are satisfied: the genetic correlation between them is substantial, and the heritability of the secondary trait is greater than that of the primary trait (Hallauer and Miranda Filho, 1995). Many authors have estimated genetic correlations among different maize traits in different maize types (Lemos et al, 1992;González et al, 1994;Pinto et al, 2000;Silva et al, 2001;Farias Neto and Miranda Filho, 2001;Saleh et al, 2002;Granate et al, 2002;Daros et al, 2004;Santos et al, 2005;Andrade and Miranda Filho, 2008). However, there is limited published research with genetic correlation estimates for maize landraces.…”
