Factors affecting vegetable stand establishment

Abstract: Several factors can influence stand establishment in vegetable crop production. Environmental conditions such as soil physical characteristics, temperature and moisture, various cultural practices, and diseases may all be limiting factors in establishing maximum stands and achieving the highest possible yields. Measures taken to increase stands include soil improvements, implementing cultural practices, and use of chemical and biological seed treatments. Combining seed treatments and cultural/tillage practices… Show more

“…It has been suggested that smoke can possibly be used in promoting the growth of horticulture and vegetable crops (Brown and Van Staden, 1998;Light and Van Staden, 2004). Particularly in vegetable crop production, maximum yield is achieved when there is a better emergence and stand establishment of the seedlings (Grassbaugh and Bennett, 1998). Staggered emergence results in seedlings of different sizes, which can develop into a heterogeneous crop (Bennett et al, 1992).…”

“…The major factors affecting plantlet establishment are seed health and vigour, plantlet quality and health, and the environmental conditions under which the transplantation is performed, namely abiotic and biotic stresses. Implementation of the best conditions at the transplanting stage and adjustment of agrotechniques enable the genetic potential of the seed to be realized (Grassbaugh and Bennett, 1998).…”

“…Vegetable growers need more uniformity and precise prediction of the emergence and crop stand (Pervez et al, 2009). Similarly, high yield of the vegetable crops can only be obtained with high stand establishment of seedlings so that they can compete with the environment and can produce best plantation (Grassbaugh and Bennett, 1998). Crops lacking a good stand show reduced efficacy of other agronomic practices and usually such inputs can never compensate for the negative impact of a poor stand.…”
