Abstract:Seed treatment refers to the application of certain agents physical, chemical or biological to the seed prior to sowing in order to suppress, control or repel pathogens, insects and other pests that attack seeds, seedlings or plants and it ranges from a basic dressing to coating and pelleting. Introduction and ban of arsenic (used from 1740 until 1808) is the key milestones in the history of modern seed treatment till then a continuous research and advancement in this technology is going on. The technological advancement prepared a roadmap for refining existing seed treatment technologies and future work on technologies like fluid drilling as a way to sow germinated seeds where gel can also serve as a delivery system for other materials, seed priming advances the early phase of germination without redicle emergence. Another advanced technology, solid matrix priming (SMP) has been evaluated as a means to advances the germination of seeds and serve as a carrier for useful material too. Physical and biological seed treatments alone an alternative to chemicals or in combination with a chemical treatment are being used worldwide because of their environmental safety and socioeconomic aspects. Biological seed treatments are expected to be one of the fastest growing seed treatment sectors in the near future, in part because they are easier to register at Environment Protection Agency (EPA). Lack of awareness to seed treatments at farmer's level is one of the limiting factors in disease management and hence, efforts should be made at farmer's level to adopt the technology. Keeping the all above facts in mind, selected seed treatment technologies with their improvement and significance will be discussed in this review.

Seeds are the means of propagating about 90% of all food crops in the world, and they significantly influence yield potential in crop plants. Moreover, seeds are adversely affected by a number of factors such as postharvest and storage disease pathogens and unfavourable environmental conditions. Seed-borne pathogens represent a major threat to crop establishment and yield. Exposure of seeds to disease pathogens and other adverse conditions disrupts their normal physiology and metabolism which ultimately affects productivity. It is therefore imperative to promptly diagnose, treat, prevent and control seed related diseases. As with every other sphere of scientific studies, seed pathology has evolved tremendously over time; hence in this paper the development and emerging perspectives of this all important discipline was reviewed. Pathogen exclusion by detection and elimination of infested seed lots is required for disease management but traditional and conventional measures such as visual examination, use of media culture and serology are inadequate to detect pathogens associated with seed. In contrast, Nucleic acid-based molecular tools, such as the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) have emerged as faster and more reliable means for detecting and quantifying pathogens in seeds than conventional techniques.

The role of Alternaria sp on seed vigor of rapeseed, Brassica napus, was investigated. Seed samples were collected from rapeseed growing regions of Sindh province. The samples were processed for fungal recovery using blotter paper and agar plate methods. Both methods produced a number of parasitic and saprophytic fungi. Among the recovered fungi, Alternaria sp was predominant with 16% average infection. Similarly, effect of seed treatment with Topsin M. was examined in this experiment. It improved seed health significantly over inoculated seeds. The treated seeds showed greater germination (16.15%) with 83.69% more healthy seedling in comparison with inoculated seeds. Root and shoot systems were significantly improved in seedlings from treated seed compared to those from inoculated seeds. The results of this study suggest grading seed samples to reduce seed impurities and seed treatment (particularly with Topsin M) to eliminate seed borne pathogen, especially Alternaria from rapeseed to enhance production by the growers.
