A brief review of soil water, solute transport and regionalized variable analysis

Abstract: We initially review basic concepts of the forces acting on soil water, soil water potential and soil water retention, and equations to describe soil water movement under water-saturated and unsaturated conditions. Processes of infiltration, evaporation and redistribution of water will be presented for simple initial and boundary conditions occurring within homogeneous soil columns. Next we consider the physical, chemical and biological processes within a soil profile that distribute, dilute or concentrate solu… Show more

“…1a), when the initial soilwater content is low, infiltration rate starts with high values decreasing gradually to a final constant rate (Jury et al, 1991;Nielsen et al, 1997). In 98 of 120 field tests (Table 4), infiltration followed the typical curve; however, 22 of 120 field tests did not follow the typical infiltration curve and were considered anomalous (Table 4).…”

“…This is similar to how the Boltzmann transformation is used in soil science to transform various soil water content distributions to a reference soil distribution (Nielsen et al. ). We cannot emphasize enough that although we use the variables x and t frequently in this paper, they represent arbitrary variables and are in no way limited to the conventional associations of spatial and temporal coordinates.…”
