The study aimed to evaluate different sowing densities and row spacings on grain yield and biomass in the white lupine crop, cv. ‘Comum’. The experimental design was a randomized block in a 4 x 4 factorial scheme, with four row spacings (20, 40, 60 and 80 cm) and four sowing densities in the row (10, 15, 20 and 25 plants m-1), with four replicates. The evaluated variables were: grain yield, hundred-grain weight, fresh and dry matter and the contents of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium in the plant tissue. The highest grain yield was obtained with row spacing of 20 cm, regardless of plant density. The density of 25 plants m-1 and row spacing of 20 cm increased the fresh and dry matter yield. The adjustment of plant density and row spacing did not affect the content of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium in plant tissue.

It is important to adequately size the number of plants that should be evaluated to allow precise inferences about the traits under evaluation. The study of the linear relations among traits provides important information, especially in the identification of traits for indirect selection. So, the objectives of this work were to determine the sample size (number of plants) to estimate the mean of Crotalaria spectabilis traits and investigate the relations among traits. Were randomly selected 200 and 110 plants of C. spectabilis in the experiments conducted, respectively, in 2019/2020 and 2020/2021. In these 310 plants, the following traits were evaluated: plant height, stem diameter, number of nodes, number of leaves, leaf fresh matter, stem fresh matter, shoot fresh matter, leaf dry matter, stem dry matter and shoot dry matter. The sample size was calculated to estimate the mean of these traits, based on Student’s t-distribution, and the relations among traits were investigated through correlation and path analysis. To estimate the mean of these ten traits of C. spectabilis, with a maximum error of 10% of the mean and 95% confidence level, 64 plants are needed. In an experiment, to estimate the mean of each treatment with 10% precision, 64 plants per treatment must be evaluated. The number of leaves has a positive linear relation with the amount leaf, stem and shoot fresh and dry matter.

-Forage turnip (Raphanus sativus L. var. oleiferus Metzg.) progeny with seeds of higher physiological quality are of importance for farmers and seed producing companies. The objective of this work was to identify tests to be used in laboratories for the selection of turnip progeny having seeds of higher germination, vigor, seedling emergence in the field, and storage potential. Seeds of 100 turnip progeny of paternal half-sibs were evaluated as to water content, 1,000-seed mass, first count of the standard germination test, accelerated aging, and seedling emergence in the field. The seeds were subjected to storage for 12 months in unifoliate paper bags kept under room conditions and then evaluated by means of the standard germination test, first count of the standard germination test, and water content. The data were examined as to variance and genetic and phenotypic correlations, heritability, coefficients of genetic variation, and selection gain. The standard germination test, first count of germination, and the accelerated aging test can be used to select forage turnip progeny for seed physiological quality and storage potential. None of the tests used were efficient at selecting progeny with high field emergence.
