Abstract: Alpinia zerumbet is a medicinal plant from Asian origin used in folk medicine for the treatment of hypertension, which effect is attributed to terpinen-4-ol, the major component of the essential oil. The objective of this work was to identify the essential oil secretory structures in the leaf, flower, root and rhizome of this plant, and analyze the content and the chemical composition of the oil in the different organs of the plant. Sections were subjected to histochemical test with Nadi reagent for in situ lo… Show more

“…The presence of special storage structures in the root possibly containing terpenoids was investigated by a histochemical analysis using NADI (dimethyl-pphenyl-enediamine and a-naphthol) staining (David and Carde, 1964;Caissard et al, 2004;Jezler et al, 2013;Kromer et al, 2016;Muravnik et al, 2016;Steševi c et al, 2016;Stoji ci c et al, 2016). The NADI reagent has been reported to give rise to a blue/purple color in the presence of oxygenated or lipophilic compounds (e.g.…”

“…The essential oil of A. zerumbet, which has been used as a folk medicine to treat a wide variety of conditions, possesses valuable medicinal properties [1]. The essential oil obtained from leaves of A. zerumbet through hydro and steam distillation has a distinct aroma, possesses antioxidant activity, and has been analyzed using gas chromatography and infrared (IR) spectroscopy [2][3][4][5][6][7]. In the previous studies, the extracts of A. zerumbet and other Alpinia spp.…”
