The increasing demand for animal protein has driven significant changes in cattle breeding systems, mainly in feedlots, with the use of young bulls fed on diets richer in concentrate (C) than in forage (F). These changes are likely to affect animal manure, demanding re-evaluation of the biogas production per kg of TS and VS added, as well as of its agronomic value as a biofertilizer, after anaerobic digestion. Here, we determined the biogas production and agronomic value (i.e., the macronutrient concentration in the final biofertilizer) of the manure of young bulls fed on diets with more (80% C+20% F; 'HighC' diet) or less (65% C+35% F; 'LowC' diet) concentrate, evaluating the effects of temperature (25, 35, and 40°C) and the use of an inoculum, during anaerobic digestion. A total of 24 benchtop reactors were used, operating in a semi-continuous system, with a 40-day hydraulic retention time (HRT). The manure from animals given the HighC diet had the greatest potential for biogas production, when digested with the use of an inoculum and at 35 or 40°C (0.6326 and 0.6207m(3)biogas/kg volatile solids, or VS, respectively). We observed the highest levels of the macronutrients N, P, and K in the biofertilizer from the manure of animals given HighC. Our results show that the manure of young bulls achieves its highest potential for biogas production and agronomic value when animals are fed diets richer in concentrate, and that biogas production increases if digestion is performed at higher temperatures, and with the use of an inoculum.

Structural features, labor conditions and family succession in dairy production systems in Paraná State, Brazil

-Brazil is the fourth largest milk producer in the world. Besides its economic relevance, milk production has an important social function in Brazil. Dairy activity employs a large amount of people and contributes to regional development. But some drawbacks remain, such as poor labor conditions and problems for family succession. Labor conditions may be critical for successors to decide whether to remain in dairy activity. Paraná is the second largest milk producer in Brazil, mainly with smallholder family dairy systems. This paper aims to discuss labor conditions, family succession and structural features in Paraná's dairy activity. Our hypothesis is that family-based farms present poorer structure, poorer labor conditions and are less prone to family succession. The method comprised face-to-face interviews with 153 dairy farmers, in two groups: 117 family-based farms (Group 1) and 36 hired-labor farms (Group 2). Common factor analysis led to identify three factors: "structure", "labor conditions" and "individual conditions to family succession". Dairy farms in Group 1 present poorer structural and labor conditions, although being more prone to family succession, partially supporting our above hypothesis. Thus, structural features and labor conditions seem not to be the driving factors for the intent to family succession, which suggests the existence of other incentives. Results also indicate the need to improve labor conditions, especially for Group 1, since poor labor conditions may threaten family succession in the very long run. Efforts to improve family labor conditions are necessary to ensure long-term sustainability of dairy farming in Paraná State. Further studies could investigate social, market, technology and political features directing decision-making in family succession. Expanding the variables for labor conditions and structure, as well as including other social and behavioral factors, could put more light on the differences between dairy farms using and not using hired labor. Finally, a deeper investigation on reasons why family-based farmers do not promote better labor conditions is critical for the future of Paraná's dairy sector.

O presente trabalho tem como objetivo avaliar a atual situação da atividade, base da produção e nível tecnológico utilizado pelos produtores familiares filiados ao Programa Muriaé Pecuária. O estudo abrange a microrregião do município de Muriaé/MG, os dados foram coletados por meio de visita as propriedades rurais e mediante a aplicação de questionário em entrevista direta com o proprietário ou responsável pela propriedade. O estudo constituiu-se de 129 propriedades visitadas, com 129 entrevistas realizadas com produtores filiados ao Programa Muriaé Pecuária. O questionário abrangeu: característica das propriedades, atividades no núcleo familiar das propriedades, aspecto do rebanho, nutrição animal, técnicas utilizadas pelos produtores e sanidade animal. Os resultados permitiram aferir as seguintes características das propriedades: pequenas propriedades, propriedades próprias, arrendadas e por posse de comodatário, renda principal a produção leiteira, mão de obra de base familiar na maioria das propriedades, atividades não agrícolas fazem parte da dinâmica das propriedades, variação de cinco espécies de gramíneas, raças bovinas europeias, indianas e o cruzamento entre as mesmas. O processo produtivo nas propriedades e voltado para a produção leiteira, como também a aptidão do rebanho, com produção média diária de 113 litros, comercialização em laticínio, cooperativa, feira livre e comercio informal. A nutrição animal computa em catorze manejos alimentares diferentes, possuindo em sua maioria baixo valor nutricional na conversão alimentar em produção de leite. Os animais das propriedades se encontram em programa preventivo de doenças e enfermidades, resultado obtido através da interação veterinária realizada pelo programa, como também o manejo convencional. A atividade pecuária dos produtores familiares de Muriaé se encontra com baixa especialização, sua base produtiva é a produção de leite, seguido por atividades secundarias no incremento da renda, as propriedades se encontram com deficiência tecnológica no emprego da maximização da produção de leite.
