Spatial and temporal dynamics of coffee-leaf-miner and predatory wasps in organic coffee field in formation

Abstract: The coffee production is an economic mainstay for many countries in the world. Brazil is the world's largest producer and exporter of coffee, being responsible for about 25% of the world production. It is well known that coffee plantations are susceptible to more than 850 fungal and insect pests. Among these pests, the most important significant throughout Brazil is the coffee-leaf-miner, [Leucoptera coffeella (Guérin-Mèneville & Perrottet, 1842)

“…Predatory wasps are the principal natural enemies of CLM and regulate pest populations under field conditions (TUELHER et al, 2003;PEREIRA et al, 2007;SCALÓN et al, 2011). High abundances of natural enemies in organic farming systems have also been previously reported (ALTIERI & NICHOLLS, 2004), probably due to lower anthropogenic disturbance and higher plant diversity (BIANCHI et al 2006).…”

“…The coffee leaf miner (CLM) Leucoptera coffeella (Lepidoptera: Lyonetiidae) is one of the key pests of coffee plantings and is reported in coffee growing regions throughout the world (PEREIRA et al, 2007;SCALÓN et al, 2011;RIGHI et al, 2013). The CLM larva mines the palisade parenchyma, prevents photosynthesis (NEVES et al, 2006), and may result in yield losses of 50% if control measures are not adopted (REIS & SOUZA, 1996).…”

“…Several studies indicate that the main predator wasps' species of the leaf miner that occur in the coffee plants are Polistes spp., Polybia spp., Protonectarina sylveirae (de Saussure, 1854), and Brachygastra spp. (GRAVENA, 1983a;TOZATTI;GRAVENA, 1988;PEREIRA et al, 2007;SCALON et al, 2011), where the genera Polybia spp. and Polistes spp.…”
