“…A cladistic treatment of the species belonging to the Dilatata group is especially problematic because they are allopolyploids (Burson, 1991a, Souza-Chies & Cavalli-Molina, 1995, Casa et al, 2002, Machado et al, 2005, thus their evolutionary history includes at least a reticulation event.…”

“…Paspalum distichum is 3 nerved, P. scrobiculatum is 5–7 nerved, and P. dilatatum is 5–9 nerved. Machado, Valls, Penaloza, and Santos (2005) concluded that the relative length of lower lemma and upper lemma is also of taxonomic importance, but precise measurement must be made. The lemma is ovate in P. dilatatum and P. distichum whereas P. scrobiculatum possesses elliptic or orbicular lemma (Table 4).…”

Moreover, it must be taken into account that Panicoideae includes genera of great importance for natural pastures, most notably Paspalum, which has been the subject of multidisciplinary studies aimed at its commercial use (Quarín et al 1997;Casa et al 2002;Souza-Chies et al 2005;Machado et al 2005;Miz & Souza-Chies 2006;Pozzobon et al 2008).…”
