Abstract:Background: Toxoplasmosis is caused by the intracellular protozoan Toxoplasma gondii, which has a worldwide distribution. Here, in the first study of asymptomatic infection by this protozoan in the state of Espírito Santo, Brazil, we present an analysis of the prevalence and annual incidence of asymptomatic cases of toxoplasmosis in a rural area of this state.Methods: Plasma samples from 79 individuals who had responded to questionnaires were analyzed by IgG ELISA, and positive cases were subjected to an IgG avidity test. Follow-up lasted one year and consisted of quarterly visits.Results: Of the 79 individuals assessed, 67.1% were positive for IgG anti-Toxoplasma gondii, and the incidence was 6.2 per 100 person-years of observation. No statistically significant association was found between toxoplasmosis and contact with cats or between toxoplasmosis and consumption of pork, mutton or lamb, even if these were undercooked or raw. According to the multivariate analysis, the only risk factor related to infection appears to be increasing age (OR = 1.086). Confirming the data in the literature, the statistical analysis showed that with every additional year of age the risk of contracting toxoplasmosis increase by 8.6%. Conclusion:The inhabitants of rural communities in the mountainous region of Espírito Santo are very exposed to Toxoplasma gondii and know very little about the disease, making them vulnerable to exposure.

ResumoForam analisados 600 soros de bovinos abatidos nos matadouros sob Inspeção Municipal de Ilhéus e Itabuna, e no matadouro frigorífico sob Inspeção Federal em Jequié, BA, para anticorpos anti-Toxoplasma gondii por imunofluorescência indireta. A prevalência total foi de 11,83% (71), sendo os animais positivos 19,3% (37) no matadouro de Ilhéus, 9,8% em Itabuna (21) e 6,8% (13) em Jequié. Dos animais positivos, 65 (91,5%) tiveram título de 1:64, e 6 (8,5%) de 1:256. A maioria dos soros positivos para T. gondii foram oriundos de animais provenientes de granjas leiteiras e foram abatidos nos matadouros sob inspeção municipal em comparação com aqueles animais que procederam de fazendas com criação extensiva, e abatidos em matadouros sob inspeção federal.Palavras-chave: Toxoplasmose, prevalência, gado de abate. AbstractSerum samples of 600 slaughtered cattle from Ilhéus and Itabuna Municipal slaughterhouse and Jequié Federal slaughterhouse, all of them located in the State of Bahia were screened using an indirect immunofluorescent antibody test against Toxoplasma gondii. Prevalence was 11.83% (71), and positive samples were distributed as 19.3% (37) from Ilhéus, 9.8% (21) from Itabuna and 6.8% (13) from Jequié slaughterhouses respectively. From positive cattle, 91.5% (65) had titles 1:64, and 8.5% (6) had title 1:256. The majority of serum positive samples against T. gondii were related to animals from dairy farms which were slaughtered at municipality stockyards under municipal inspection in comparison with those slaughtered at Federal inspection which were related to beef cattle that were raised in farms extensively.

Toxoplasmosis is a zoonotic disease caused by the protozoan Toxoplasma gondii. The aim of the present study was to determine the occurrence and identify the risk factors associated with transmission of T. gondii to chickens raised in different systems (free-ranged and conϐined) to produce eggs or meat. The 810 animals were allocated in two experimental groups according to the production system purpose: 460 broiler chickens (Group 1) and 350 layer chickens (Group 2). In order to analyze the possible factors involved in T. gondii infection in the chickens, an epidemiological questionnaire was developed for all properties.The serological detection of anti-Toxoplasma gondii antibodies was performed by Indirect Immunoϐluorescence (IFAT) and by Enzime Linked Imunossorbent Assay (ELISA). Since the agreement index (kappa) between these two serological techniques was considered high, 21.2% of the 810 animals were considered reactive. In Group 1, 12.2% (56/460) were positive, while in the Group 2 the positivity rate was 33.1% (116/350). The production system may be inϐluencing the seropositivity of the animals in both groups. However, only in Group 2 it was possible to notice a statistically signiϐicant relationship between the breeding system and the frequency of positive sera. This result indicates that, at least for laying hens, the production system is directly involved in T. gondii infection. The contact with cats in Group 1 did not inϐluence the distribution of seroreactive animals, but in Group 2 a signiϐicant relationship was observed. The occurrence of anti-T. gondii antibodies was high in both groups (broiler and posture chickens). Free-ranged chickens raised for egg production proved to be the most exposed group to the T. gondii infection. This can be related to the fact that these animals stay for longer periods in the farms, in direct contact with possibly contaminated soil by the presence of domestic cats.INDEX TERMS: Toxoplasma gondii, broiler chickens, laying hens, transmission.RESUMO.-[Ocorrência da infecção por Toxoplasma gondii e fatores associados à sua transmissão em aves de corte e postura produzidas em diferentes tipos de criação.] A toxoplasmose é uma zoonose causada pelo protozoário Toxoplasma gondii.
