A study was conducted to determine the epidemiological status of bovine tuberculosis in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. The state was divided in seven regions, and in each of them, a pre-established number of farms was randomly sampled. In each farm, cows with age equal to or greater than 24 months were selected at random and submitted to the comparative cervical tuberculin test. The animals whose tests were inconclusive were retested with the same diagnostic procedure within a minimum interval of 60 days. In all, 9,895 animals from 1,067 farms were tested. An epidemiological questionnaire was applied in the farms in order to identify risk factors associated with bovine tuberculosis. The prevalence of infected herds in the state was 2.8% [1.8; 4.0] and that of infected animals was 0.7% [0.4; 1.0]. There was a trend towards a concentration of infected herds in the northern part of the state, with a predominance of dairy and mixed herds. The risk factors associated with the condition of infected herds were being a dairy herd (OR = 2.90 [1.40; 6.13]) and herds with 16 or more cows (OR = 2.61 [1.20; 5.49]). Thus, the best strategy to be adopted by the state is the implementation of surveillance systems to detect and remediate the infected herds, preferably incorporating elements of risk-based surveillance. In addition, the state must carry out a solid action of health education so that the producers test animals for bovine tuberculosis before introducing them in their herds. ResumoUm estudo foi realizado para determinar a situação epidemiológica da tuberculose bovina no Estado de Rio Grande do Sul. O Estado foi dividido em sete regiões e em cada uma delas foi aleatoriamente amostrado um número pré-estabelecido de propriedades. Dentro de cada propriedade, fêmeas com idade igual ou superior a 24 meses foram escolhidas aleatoriamente e submetidas ao teste tuberculínico 20; 5.49]). Assim, a melhor estratégia a ser adotada pelo estado é a implementação de sistema de vigilância para detecção e saneamento dos focos, de preferência incorporando elementos de vigilância baseada em risco. Além disso, o estado deve realizar uma sólida ação de educação sanitária para que seus produtores passem a testar os animais para tuberculose bovina antes de introduzi-los em seus plantéis. Bovine tuberculosis is a zoonosis with worldwide distribution. Its control has a direct impact on public health and livestock production. This study estimated the prevalence of infected herds and adult bovines and evaluated risk factors associated with the presence of tuberculosis within herds in the state of Paraná. The state was divided in seven livestock regions and independent sampling was performed. A total of 1,419 farms were sampled and 16,045 animals were tested using the intradermal comparative cervical tuberculin diagnostic test. The apparent and estimated prevalence rates in farms and adult bovine animals were 2.15% (95% CI: 1.31-3.00) and 0.42% (95% CI: 0.04-0.81), respectively. It was not possible to state with 95% confidence that the disease prevalence in any region was significantly different from that in other regions. There were no positive animals in the western region, and the prevalence of positive herds and animals in the other regions ranged from 1.03% to 3.89% and 0.17% to 1.08%, respectively. The logistic regression model identified larger herd size (OR = 2.4) and mechanical milking (OR = 5.18) as risk factors associated with the presence of bovine tuberculosis. The combination of low prevalence with risk factors associated to larger herds and more intensive dairy farming, renders the state of Paraná a good candidate for the implementation of industry-based free-herd accreditation schemes and makes a case for planning risk-based surveillance targeted at major dairy basins. A prevalência aparente em propriedades e em bovinos adultos no estado do Paraná foi estimada em 2,15% [IC 95%: 1,31-3,00] e 0,42% [IC 95%: 0,04-0,81], respectivamente. Em relação às prevalências estimadas por região do estado, foram observadas heterogeneidades, não foi possível afirmar com 95% de confiança que alguma região se destacou das demais em relação à presença da tuberculose bovina. Tuberculose em felinos domésticos (Felis catus) no sul do Rio Grande do Sul

RESUMO: Descrevem-se os aspectos clínico patológicos de quatro casos de tuberculose em felinos domésticos no Sul do Rio Grande do sul. Foi realizado um estudo retrospectivo dos casos diagnosticados como tuberculose em gatos necropsiados no Laboratório Regional de Diagnóstico da Universidade Federal de Pelotas (LRD/UFPel) no período de janeiro de 2000 a dezembro de 2014. Em dois casos a amplificação da sequência genética IS6110 específica para Mycobacterium tuberculosis demonstrou que a doença era de origem humana. Os outros dois foram positivos para Mycobacterium spp. Os sinais clínicos caracterizaram-se por emagrecimento progressivo, anorexia e dispneia. As alterações macroscópicas evidenciadas eram de caquexia, aumento de volume dos linfonodos submandibulares com áreas focais de aspecto caseoso ao corte. Nos pulmões havia áreas multifocais a coalescentes amareladas de aspecto caseoso, discretamente elevadas e firmes na superfície pleural. Histologicamente havia broncopneumonia e linfadenite granulomatosas. A coloração de Ziehl-Neelsen evidenciou a presença de bacilos álcool-ácidos resistentes. Houve imunomarcação positiva para micobactéria pela técnica de imuno-histoquímica. Alerta-se para a importância da tuberculose felina como um problema de saúde pública pois gatos infectados podem servir de fonte para a disseminação das micobactérias no ambiente, além de serem sentinelas para a ocorrência da enfermidade em seres humanos.
