Clove oil as anaesthetic for juveniles of matrinxã Brycon cephalus (Gunther, 1869)

Abstract: Many chemicals have been used as anaesthetics in fish farms and fish biology laboratories to keep the fish immobilized during handling procedures and to prevent accidents and animal stress. In Brazil, tricaine methane sulfonate (MS 222), quinaldine sulfate, benzocaine, and phenoxyethanol are the most common fish anaesthetics used to prevent fish stress during handling, but many side effects such as body and gill irritations, corneal damage and general risks of intoxication have been reported. Clove oil is a na… Show more

“…However, in North America the FDA does not approve the use of clove oil for aquaculture purposes (Sladky et al, 2001) Researchers have investigated the effects of clove oil in fishes (Soto & Burhanuddin, 1995;Keene et al, 1998;Cho & Heath, 2000;Sladky et al, 2001;Tort et al, 2002;Woody et al, 2002;Small, 2004). A study demonstrating the efficacy of clove oil in matrinxã (Inoue et al, 2003), but this work only determined the induction and recovery times to anesthesia.…”

“…Although well adapted to captivity, this species is very sensitive to handling and transport stress, being very agitated and disturbed, especially in occasions where the space is reduced (Inoue et al 2003). Due to this extreme activity, scale and mucus losses are observed, facilitating the occurrence of diseases which can cause major losses to the fish culture (Inoue et al 2003).…”

“…After 96 hours of exposure, 12 animals from each treatment were randomly selected, anesthetized using clove oil (30μL L -1 water) (INOUE et al, 2003), submitted to section spinal cord and autopsy to gather gills and liver. Afterwards, tissue samples were quickly removed and fixed in Bouin.…”
