A sobrevivência e o comprimento total dos alevinos foram influenciados pelos tratamentos (p < 0,05). A ação sinérgica de aflatoxinas e Aeromonas hydrophila mostrou-se eficaz ao provocar a morte dos alevinos e influenciar a conversão alimentar e comprimento. ABSTRACT:The objectives of this study were to assess the effect of the intake of aflatoxin on the development of tilapia and to evaluate the impact of inoculation with Aeromonas hydrophila on performance parameters, so these two individual tests were performed. One hundred and twenty fingerlings aged 35 days old, with mean weight of 1.55 ± 0.005 g and mean length of 5 cm were used in each test, distributed in 20 tanks. Each experimental unit consisted of a 60 L tank with six fingerlings. In the first experiment, increasing levels of aflatoxin (0.350, 0.757, 1.177 mg.kg feed -1 ) were used as treatments and, for the control group, a diet without aflatoxin was used in a completely randomized design with four treatments and five replicates. In the second experiment, a control group of Nile tilapia fingerlings was used and received a diet without aflatoxin, inoculated with saline solution (group 1) and Aeromonas hydrophila (group 2), as well as groups of animals fed on diets containing 0.350 mg.kg feed -1 of aflatoxin (group 3), 0.757 mg.kg feed -1 of aflatoxin (group 4) and 1.177 mg.kg feed -1 of aflatoxin (group 5), and these groups were inoculated with Aeromonas hydrophila. The survival rate and the total length of fingerlings were influenced by the treatments (p < 0.05). The synergistic action of aflatoxins and Aeromonas hydrophila was effective and caused the death of experimental fish, thus affecting feed conversion and length.

Aflatoxin is a common contaminant of foods, particularly in the staple diets of many developing countries. To evaluate adverse effects of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) toxicity on health status in the Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus, fish were fed diet contaminated with either 20 or 100 ppb AFB1 for 6 or 12 weeks. Growth indices, survival rate and hepatosomatic index (HSI) were assessed. Blood samples were collected for hematological profiles (e.g. RBCs and WBC count, Hb content). Liver enzyme activity; aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) as well as alkaline phosphatase (ALP), were evaluated and toxin residues in the liver and musculature were detected. Liver histopathological investigations were carried out, whereas antioxidant glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and glutathione S-transferase (GST) gene expression were determined in this tissue by semi-quantitative RT-PCR. Furthermore, to test the fish immune status, challenge against Aeromonas hydrophila was conducted. Results indicated that 100 ppb AFB1 negatively impacted O. niloticus weight gain, feed efficiency, hematological profiles, HSI as well as liver histopathology, while increase in AST, ALT, ALP liver enzymes activity was evidenced. Further, the expression of liver GPx and GST down-regulated and AFB1 residues were always detected in the liver and only in the musculature in fish fed 100 ppb AFB1 for 12 weeks. The ability of fish to withstand A. hydrophila infection was remarkably lowered. Overall, the results herein demonstrate the toxic effects of AFB1 in O. niloticus. The observed alterations in fish status, especially in the liver coincide well with the expected oxidative stress resulting from the AFB1 toxicity. ª 2015 The Egyptian German Society for Zoology. Nanoproducts became widely used materials all over the world. Antimicrobial properties of titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticle (NP) were examined against Aeromonas hydrophila (A. hydrophila) bacteria and the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was found to be 20 μg/ml of TiO2NP. In addition, the treatment efficacy of TiO2NP was examined in Oreochromis niloticus (O. niloticus) infected with A. hydrophila. One hundred and eighty fish (54±2.4 g b.w.) were divided into six groups (G). O. niloticus in G1, G2 and G3 were fed for 30 days with 0, 20 and 100 μg/g b.w. TiO2NP, respectively, while G4, G5 and G6 were i.p. injected with 0.2 ml distal water, 20 and 100 μg/g b.w. TiO2NP, respectively, for three times with ten days of interval. The blood parameters as well as some of the biochemical parameters of O. niloticus that received high dosage of TiO2NP were significantly affected regardless to the administration route. Elevation of the activities of glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and metallothionine (MT) were recorded with the high dosage. Furthermore, O. niloticus subjected to high dosage of TiO2NP had the lower survival rate (SR%) especially with the injection route (50%). On the other hand, no significant changes were demonstrated with the perceived TiO2NP MIC. The mortality rate (MR%) of challenged O. niloticus against A. hydrophila was decreased in case of TiO2NP MIC exposure, as G2 and G5 revealed 20 and 30%, respectively. Therefore, the 20 μg/g b.w. of TiO2NP could safely protect O. niloticus against A. hydrophila infection since no health hazards was observed. Meanwhile, health status of O. niloticus was adversely affected with high dosage of TiO2NP irrespective to the route of administration.
