Abstract: Removable partial dentures (RPD) demand specific hygienic cleaning and the combination of brushing with immersion in chemical solutions has been the most recommended method for control of biofilm. However, the effect of the cleansers on metallic components has not been widely investigated. This study evaluated the effect of different cleansers on the surface of RPD. Five disc specimens (12 mm x 3 mm metallic disc centered in a 38 x 18 x 4 mm mould filled with resin) were obtained for each experimental situatio… Show more

“…6,24 Water was used as a control because it is indicated for overnight immersion, 5 and it prevents the release of ions. 25,26 Among the properties of the acrylic resin, color stability is considered to be the most decisive in both the longevity of the prosthesis and in patient satisfaction. 16 The measurements were performed with a colorimeter using an objective, and quantitative readings were analyzed and correlated to NBS units for comparing the color and quality control functions.…”

“…7 Corega contains agents that release oxygen with enzymes, supporting the hypothesis that oxidation in combination with a strong alkaline solution can be deleterious. 7,17 In relation to the metallic components, weight loss and ion release, 19 as well as tarnishing and spot corrosion, 25 were observed in Co-Cr alloys after immersion in a citric acid product (Medical Interporous). With regard to titanium, Davi et al 26 did not find alterations in surface roughness, but the color was not evaluated.…”

“…Regarding peroxides, there have been reports on the occurrence of damage to the acrylic resin (11) and the metallic components of the prosthetic device in the form of surface oxidation (12) and release of ions in the solution (13). Factors such as water temperature, immersion time and following the manufacturer's instructions are considered critical (9).…”
