Genetic power of a brazilian three-generation family with generalized aggressive periodontitis. II

Abstract: The genetic power of a Brazilian three-generation family with generalized aggressive periodontitis (GAgP) has been reported. The empirical logarithms of the odds (LOD) score thresholds for genetic linkage analysis of complex diseases proposed by Haines rely on confirmation from independent datasets. This study estimated the power of another large Brazilian family with GAgP for future linkage analysis. The three-generation family was seen at the Dental School of the Federal University of Bahia. Following the pr… Show more

“…Correlation between plaque formation and periodontal disease etiology was established with the understanding that plaque maturation is the trigger for the start of inflammatory processes (2), which leads to the destruction of periodontal tissues (9). Traditional scaling and root planning are essential procedures in periodontal therapy (10) and rely on mechanical removal of plaque, calculus, root-bound toxins and contaminated cementum (11).…”

“…Familial aggregation studies carried out by Marazita and coworkers (168) suggest that early-onset, or aggressive, periodontitis is inherited as an autosomal-dominant trait in Black families. Also, Rapp et al (225) have shown familial aggregation of periodontal disease in three generations of Brazilian families. Genetic studies of families affected with aggressive periodontitis were reviewed by Meng and co-workers (174).…”

“…In a different study conducted on the Chinese Han population, 233 individuals from 73 families were enrolled and autosomal recessive inheritance was suggested for the inheritance of AgP . Furthermore, in a different study involving a single family, which was ascertained through a 23‐year‐old female proband, family aggregation rate of AgP was reported to be high and autosomal dominant transmission was suggested as the pattern of inheritance …”
