Adenomatoid odontogenic tumor - a rare cause of jaw swelling

Abstract: Adenomatoid odontogenic tumor (AOT) is an uncommon tumor of odontogenic origin, characterized histologically by the formation of ductlike structures with amyloid-like deposits. Histogenesis of AOT is still uncertain and it is often considered as a hamartomatous lesion rather than a true neoplasm. AOT has a benign behavior and conservative surgical enucleation or curettage is sufficient. We report a case of AOT in a 15-year-old female who presented with left-sided jaw swelling with tooth resorption. Histopathol… Show more

“…The age of onset of the tumor in our patient, who was a 14-year-old boy, was concordant with the occurrence of most AOT during the second decade (69%), usually in the 13-year to 19-year age group, 12 or sometimes during the third decade. 13 To note, AOT mainly affect young women according to gender ratio reported in several series: 2/1, 14 1.37/1, 15 or 2.31/1, 16 respectively.…”

“…3,4 The clinical differential diagnosis can be odontogenic cysts like dentigerous cyst, odontogenic keratocyst and calcifying odontogenic cysts 3 and also odontogenic tumors, such as ameloblastoma, ameloblastic fibroma and ameloblastic fibro-odontoma. 5 In the present report, case of intraosseous follicular variety showed well-defined radiolucency surrounding both the coronal and radicular aspects of impacted 43. The extrafollicular variety showed radiolucency involving the root of erupted 45.…”

“…4,8 Follicular and extrafollicular variants together are more commonly found in the maxilla than in the mandible 4 and most of the tumors involve anterior aspect of the jaws. 5 In the present report, the first case was an intraosseous follicular type involving impacted mandibular canine and the second case was intraosseous extrafollicular type and also found in the posterior region of the mandible.…”

“…The adenomatoid odontogenic tumor has a low rate of recurrence, surgical enucleation of the lesion being the treatment of choice 12 . This is explained by the fact that AOT is usually delimited by a capsule of well-developed conjunctive tissue, and may be a solid mass, or have varying degrees of cystic degeneration.…”
