Background: In Nigeria, childhood tuberculosis (TB), a debilitating and deadly disease, is highly prevalent and case reporting is poor due to weak health systems. Globally, children account for at least 10 percent of the TB burden, yet they remain neglected in TB prevention and control efforts. Research studies integrating family and community-centered strategies have been recommended by stakeholders to address the paucity of current local prevention and management strategies for childhood TB. Study Design: Observational study. Methods: This quantitative cross-sectional study explored the relationship between caregivers' quality of life (QOL) and the reporting of TB in their children aged 0 -14 years. Using the abbreviated version of World Health Organization's (WHO) QOL tool, the WHOQOL-BREF, data were collected individually in a face-to-face setting from caregivers (n = 47) whose children had been diagnosed with TB in Bauchi State, Northeastern Nigeria, over a 5-year period. Data were collected in the same manner from another set of caregivers of children without TB (n = 47) within the same period and setting. Results: Logistic regression indicated a statistically significant relationship (p < 0.001) between the caregivers' QOL and the reporting of childhood TB. Conclusion: This finding underscores the need to identify the factors that positively impact the QOL of caregivers of childhood TB cases. It also reflects the importance of integrating QOL interventions as part of TB control programs seeking to improve childhood TB reporting. This can mitigate the disease burden in vulnerable age-groups living in resource limited settings, thereby contributing to positive social change in the society.

BackgroundThe care demands of children with chronic diseases can affect caregivers’ health by imposing caregiving burden to them. The health status of caregivers plays a vital role in the quality of care provided to such children and in their quality of life.ObjectiveTo determine caregiving burden in caregivers and to identify relevant influential factors.MethodsIn this cross-sectional study, a total number of 249 caregivers of children with chronic diseases who referred to hospitalization and ambulatory departments of Bandar Abbas, Iran in 2016 were selected using convenience sampling method. The main caregivers who were older than 18 years and provided care to a sick child for at least three months consecutively were included. Caregiving burden was measured using the Caregiver Burden Scale. Data was analyzed SPSS 16 using descriptive statistics, Spearman’s correlation coefficient and Mann-Whitney U test.ResultsMean score of caregiving burden was 1.98 which was close to moderate level. The highest caregiving burden was observed in general strain dimension (2.35), and cerebral palsy imposed the maximum burden to caregivers (2.24). Correlation coefficient revealed that perceived caregiving burden was in connection with children’s and caregivers’ age, duration of disease and caregiving, child’s level of disability, number of family members and income level (p<0.05). Mann-Whitney U test showed that female caregivers, villagers, and caregivers dealing with more than one patient experienced higher burden (p<0.05).ConclusionDifferent variables can increase caregiving burden. Therefore, planning for holistic and family-centered interventions to decrease caregiving burden is necessary for health care providers.

RESUMOEste estudo teve como objetivo identificar a presença de indicadores de estresse, os níveis de estresse e sobrecarga junto a cuidadores formais e informais de pacientes oncológicos. Participaram da pesquisa 33 cuidadores de pacientes com câncer no total, sendo 17 informais e 16 formais. Para a coleta de dados utilizou-se: 1) Roteiro para caracterização dos participantes; 2) O Inventário de Sintomas de Estresse de Lipp -ISSL e 3) Protocolo Zarit Burden Interview -ZBT. Os resultados revelaram que 43% dos cuidadores informais encontravam-se na fase de resistência, 29% na fase de exaustão, 14% na fase de quase exaustão e 14% na fase de alerta. Os cuidadores formais 25% encontram-se na fase de exaustão e 75% na fase de resistência. A sobrecarga também apresentou-se em maior escala em cuidadores informais do que formais, sendo 47% para 18,7% repectivamente. Contudo, os resultados não revelaram diferença estatística significativa entre os grupos para incidência de estresse, mas indicou diferença em relação à sobrecarga apontando que em cuidadores profissionais a incidência é menor. Os resultados sugerem a necessidade de implantar programas de suporte para cuidadores informais e formais, desenvolver estratégias de enfrentamento, manejo com as situações de sobrecarga e estresse, objetivando melhor qualidade de vida para o cuidador e, consequentemente, para o paciente que está recebendo os cuidados.
