We aimed to evaluate the effects of sex and the linear and quadratic components of age of dam at calving, as well as apply a mixed model including maternal effect for the genetic evaluation of weaning (WW) and yearling (YW) weights. The phenotypic database was composed by Charolais, Caracu, Aberdeen Angus, and Canchim purebred and crossbred animals. Single-trait analyses were performed using models that included the maternal effect for WW and YW traits, and a model ignoring this effect on YW (YWNM). The Deviance Information Criterion (DIC), model posterior probabilities (MPP), accuracy of breeding values (ACC), and Spearman's rank correlation were applied to compare the models including and ignoring the maternal effect on YW. Sex and age of dam at calving had significant effects on WW and YW. The direct heritability estimates were 0.21±0.03 and 0.05±0.02, and the maternal heritabilities were 0.11±0.02 and 0.02±0.01 for WW and YW, respectively. The heritabilities estimated for YW may have been influenced by the several genetic groups in the population and by used conventional animal model, which may not have been the better fit model to evaluate YW in this population. The DIC, MPP, and ACC values indicated that YW outperformed the YWNM model, but the rank correlation and percentages of individuals selected in common suggested that the best animals would be selected independently of the model chosen.

BackgroundMost studies of the climate footprint of diets have been conducted in countries in the global north, but the majority of the world population lives in global south countries. We estimated total dietary greenhouse gas emissions (GHGE) in Mexico, examined the contribution of major food and beverage groups, and assessed variation across social groups.MethodsWe linked individual-level dietary data from the Mexican National Health and Nutrition Survey 2018 to the SHARP Indicators Database, containing GHGE estimates for 182 primary food and beverages.ResultsMean dietary GHGE was 3.9 kg of carbon dioxide equivalent per person per day. Dietary GHGE is highest among those in young adulthood and middle age versus adolescents and older adults, and among males, those with higher educational attainment, higher socioeconomic status, that do not speak an indigenous language, and that live in urban areas.ConclusionThe Mexican diet has a much lower carbon footprint than diets in other Latin American countries for which such estimates are available. In contrast to patterns observed in Argentina and Brazil, dietary GHGE was lowest in those in lower socioeconomic and educational strata and in rural areas. A better understanding of the differences in diet sustainability between and within countries will be needed for developing global and local strategies that meet the environmental sustainability goals.

As atividades antrópicas exercem constante pressão sobre os recursos hídricos subterrâneos, e a inserção de contaminantes no ambiente é um dos principais problemas relacionados ao uso do solo. Analisar a resposta de fatores geoambientais ao uso e a ocupação do solo é essencial para identificar as regiões com maior ou menor potencial de contaminação de aquíferos, o que contribui diretamente com ações de planejamento territorial. O objetivo desde estudo é determinar o potencial de contaminação de aquíferos no município de Artur Nogueira (São Paulo, Brasil). Para este fim, foram utilizados atributos relacionados à geologia e geomorfologia da área de estudo (unidades aquíferas, materiais inconsolidados e declividade), juntamente com o uso e ocupação do solo, os quais foram classificados entre muito baixo e muito alto potencial de contaminação, por meio de uma análise multicritério e álgebra de mapas. Aproximadamente 47 % da área do município apresenta um potencial de contaminação médio, seguido pelo alto, que ocupa cerca do 24 % da região. A presença de uma grande matriz agropecuária no município contribuiu fortemente com este resultado, juntamente com as características do meio físico, indicando que a falta de planejamento relacionado ao uso e ocupação do solo de uma região influência de forma direta o potencial de contaminação dos recursos hídricos subterrâneos.
