-The objective of this study was to identify groups of technologically homogeneous milk producers in the State of Goiás and calculate the gains for inefficient producers, considering the ones of better performance (benchmarks) with the same technological level, i.e., in the short term, and the benchmarks in higher technological level, i.e., in the long term. Multivariate statistical analysis techniques were used for the formation of homogeneous producer groups and multi-stage model of data envelopment analysis (DEA) for the estimation of efficiency scores and identification of benchmarks. The results indicated the formation of four groups of producers and indicate that, on average, the dairy farming in Goiás presents mainly characteristics of traditional, less specialized production. Estimated average efficiency for producers as a whole, or efficiency of long-term, was 0.571. The short-term results vary according to the group analyzed, but were higher than the long-term values, indicating that the factor analysis promoted technological homogeneity between the producers of the same group. Results showed a trend in dairy farming of Goiás towards adequacy of the input/output ratio to the standards of less capitalintensive production systems.

Milk production in Brazil is heading toward production systems with livestock of increased productivity. The most frequent system is the total confinement, followed by the semi-confinement. The objective of this study was to estimate some economic indicators of dairy farms with high daily production volumes, under a semi-confinement and total confinement system, located in the state of Minas Gerais. The data used was collected between the months of March, 2008 and February, 2009, in six milk production systems, three being under semi-confinement and three under total confinement. The total and operational cost methodology was used for the production cost in the profitability analysis. In the economic analysis, for having shown positive results, the production systems in semi-confinement had economic viability and conditions of producing in the short, medium and long term, with consequent capitalization of farmers; while the total confinement production systems showed negative gross margin, which indicates that farmers are losing money and accumulating debt, because the revenues were not sufficient even to pay the effective operating expenses.Key words: return analysis, dairy cattle, production cost. Comparativo de indicadores econômicos da atividade leiteira de sistemas intensivos de produção de leite no Estado de Minas GeraisA produção de leite do Brasil caminha para sistemas de produção com animais de maior produtividade. Entre esses sistemas, o de maior ocorrência é o confinamento total, seguido pelo semiconfinamento. Objetivou-se, com este trabalho, estimar e comparar alguns indicadores econômicos de fazendas leiteiras com alto volume de produção diária, em regimes de semiconfinamento e de confinamento total, localizadas no Estado de Minas Gerais. Foram utilizados os dados coletados entre março de 2008 e fevereiro de 2009, em seis sistemas de produção de leite, sendo três em semiconfinamento e três em confinamento total. Utilizou-se a metodologia do custo total e custo operacional, na análise de rentabilidade. Na análise econômica, por apresentarem resultados positivos, os sistemas de produção em semiconfinamento tiveram viabilidade econômica e condições de produzir no curto, médio e longo prazos, com consequente capitalização dos pecuaristas; enquanto os sistemas de produção em confinamento total apresentaram margem bruta negativa, isso indica que os produtores estão se descapitalizando e se endividando, pois as receitas auferidas não foram suficientes para pagar sequer as despesas operacionais efetivas.Palavras-chave: análise de rentabilidade, bovinocultura de leite, custo de produção.

Structural features, labor conditions and family succession in dairy production systems in Paraná State, Brazil

-Brazil is the fourth largest milk producer in the world. Besides its economic relevance, milk production has an important social function in Brazil. Dairy activity employs a large amount of people and contributes to regional development. But some drawbacks remain, such as poor labor conditions and problems for family succession. Labor conditions may be critical for successors to decide whether to remain in dairy activity. Paraná is the second largest milk producer in Brazil, mainly with smallholder family dairy systems. This paper aims to discuss labor conditions, family succession and structural features in Paraná's dairy activity. Our hypothesis is that family-based farms present poorer structure, poorer labor conditions and are less prone to family succession. The method comprised face-to-face interviews with 153 dairy farmers, in two groups: 117 family-based farms (Group 1) and 36 hired-labor farms (Group 2). Common factor analysis led to identify three factors: "structure", "labor conditions" and "individual conditions to family succession". Dairy farms in Group 1 present poorer structural and labor conditions, although being more prone to family succession, partially supporting our above hypothesis. Thus, structural features and labor conditions seem not to be the driving factors for the intent to family succession, which suggests the existence of other incentives. Results also indicate the need to improve labor conditions, especially for Group 1, since poor labor conditions may threaten family succession in the very long run. Efforts to improve family labor conditions are necessary to ensure long-term sustainability of dairy farming in Paraná State. Further studies could investigate social, market, technology and political features directing decision-making in family succession. Expanding the variables for labor conditions and structure, as well as including other social and behavioral factors, could put more light on the differences between dairy farms using and not using hired labor. Finally, a deeper investigation on reasons why family-based farmers do not promote better labor conditions is critical for the future of Paraná's dairy sector.
