Stability of contracts in the Brazilian wine industry

Abstract: A variety of contracts between wineries and grape growers are observed in Brazil. This study addresses the concept of coordination of food chains, particularly the stability of contractual relationships. A qualitative analysis of industry-farmers contracts is presented, followed by a quantitative analysis testing transaction cost economics-based hypothesis. Scale, location, age of vineyard, and the cooperative organizational form are addressed in terms of the effect on the stability of contracts. Vertical and … Show more

“…Furthermore, issues discussed in agri-food supply chain coordination are varied. The dominating issues are supply chain contract [12,54] and price mechanism [14,37]. Other issues related to coordination deal with climate change, the use of power to create coordination in an agri-food supply chain, coordination mechanisms to manage interdependencies, and activities or applications that require coordination.…”

“…The other tools of coordination mechanism, i.e., information sharing, joint decision-making, and collective learning, are also taken to promote a harmonious relationship and to solve conflicts between actors in an agrifood supply chain, as discussed by Sutopo et al [45], Usuga et al [50], Villegas et al [52], and Zylbersztajn and Miele [54].…”

“…The quality framing of the first is discussed above, but the second is increasingly regulated by quality clauses. Supply contracts typically consider some combination of precisely what and how much is to be supplied and from where, pricing and payment arrangements, vineyard management, harvesting arrangements, insurance issues, quality requirements and measurement issues, rights of refusal, and penalties (Zylbersztajn & Miele, 2005;Odorici & Corrado, 2004). Long-term contracts can be simpler, but will still differentiate among grape qualities and attempt to induce and reward the growing of grapes of particular qualities.…”
