Improving reproducibility and external validity. The role of standardization and data reporting of laboratory rat husbandry and housing

Abstract: Purpose: To identify the most relevant flaws in standardization in husbandry practices and lack of transparency to report them. This review proposes some measures in order to improve transparency, reproducibility and eventually external validity in experimental surgery experiments with rat model. “…A key source of variation in preclinical research is the origin of the animals used; variation in stress neurobiology, physiology, and behavior has been documented extensively across rat strains (Miller et al, 1968;Dhabhar et al, 1997;Gómez et al, 1998;Faraday, 2002;Cohen et al, 2006).
