Translational microsurgery. A new platform for transplantation research

Abstract: PURPOSE:Clinical microsurgery has been introduced in many fields, while experimental microsurgery has the cross-disciplinary features of the sciences and techniques for growth of medicine, pharmacology, veterinary, engineering etc. Training protocol, proposing a new name as Translational Microsurgery, was introduced. METHODS:Reconstructive skills of hepatic artery in pediatric living donor liver transplantation were summarized. Ex vivo training protocol using artificial blood vessel for surgeons was proposed. … Show more

“…Microsurgery with a conventional optical microscope provides a limited field of view and imposes serious strain on surgeons during long operations. Accordingly, an ophthalmological surgical technique known as "heads-up surgery" was recently developed; here, the field of view is displayed on a screen via a high-resolution camera 6 . This method is now being applied to various types of microsurgeries with long operating times that formerly required the use of a magnifying glass.…”

“…The selection of nonliving models spans from the very simple – but not very realis tic – rubber glove or rubber membrane suturing to the sophisticated computer simulators, but also includes exercises such as anastomoses on biomaterials [18, 21, 28-30]. A major aim of this training phase is to teach depth and hand-eye coordination, and gentle handling of the instruments and microscope.…”

“…We believe that microsurgical expertise can minimize surgical errors when working with experimental animals; thus, small animal models with fewer individual variations can be created. Consequently, we have focused on disseminating these techniques [9][10][11] . This study aimed to analyze the protocol for simplifying the insertion of a catheter into a blood vessel using a bent needle introducer, a commercially available injection needle whose tip has a gradual curve.…”
