Comparative evaluation of oncologic outcomes in colon cancer

Abstract: PURPOSE:In this paper we report clinical variables on colon cancer series. Oncological outcomes were compared to low-income and high-income countries. METHODS:We analysed a prospective database of 51 colon cancer patients submitted to primary tumor resection between 2010 and 2011, showing clinical variables and oncologic outcomes.RESULTS: R0 resection obtained in 80.4%, 21.6% of patients was TNM stage IV, and only 13.7% showed TNM stage I. Diseasefree survival was 32 months, overall survival was 46 months, and… Show more

“…However, these studies showed insufficient CEA data, lack of adjustment for clinical features, and inclusion of patients with palliative surgery. In other studies, there were no significant CEA findings with respect to oncologic outcomes [22]. Konish et al [23] reported similar results to ours.…”

“…Also, high postoperative CEA levels are associated with residual disease and/or distant metastasis [24,25]. In colon cancer, it is important to predict patient prognosis and detect any early recurrence, thus efforts are being made to identify prognostic factors [22,26,27]. Measurement of serum CEA is simple, fast, inexpensive, and repeatable, thus it is likely to be widely used if the prognostic significance of CEA is established in colon cancer patients [28].…”

“…Many oncologic researchers have investigated the role of serum CEA as a prognostic indicator in CRC [13][14][15][16][17][18]. In locally advanced rectal cancer, the standard treatment is nCRT followed by radical surgery, and the relationship of CEA and response to nCRT has been studied [6,7].…”

“…Many studies have investigated the role of CEA as a prognostic factor in CRC [ 10 , 11 ]. In earlier reports, elevated serum CEA level has been shown to have an adverse effect on prognosis of CRC [ 12 , 13 ], whereas other studies have reported no relationship between serum CEA and oncologic outcomes [ 14 , 15 ]. However, a few studies have focused on rectal cancer and described the prognostic effect of CEA according to nCRT.…”

“…A idade média dos pacientes portadores de tumor de cólon ao diagnóstico é de 72 anos. Portanto, o risco de desenvolver câncer de cólon e reto entre pacientes com idade superior a 50 anos é cerca de 17 vezes superior, quando comparado a pacientes com menos de 50 anos de idade (BERNARDES et al, 2016).…”
