Description of a new experimental model skin flap for studying skin viability in rats

Abstract: PURPOSE:To describe a new experimental flap for studying skin viability in rats. METHODS:Twenty male Wistar rats weighing between 250-300g were divided into two groups: group A -McFarlane technique, a 4 x 10cm flap was used (McFarlane); and in group B modified McFarlane technique, a 3 x 10cm flap was used. Seven days later, the animals were sacrificed and the area of necrosis was evaluated in both groups. RESULTS: Group Description of a new experimental model skin flap for studying skin viability in rats

“…Skin flaps based on random blood supply are frequently indicated for the surgical treatment of skin and soft tissue defects, but are at high risk for ischemia and distal necrosis due to low axial blood flow 1,7,8 . In fact, tissue ischemia is a postoperative complication that can cause partial or full thickness skin flap necrosis with unsatisfactory functional and aesthetic outcome 4 .…”

“…Skin flaps are used in the reconstruction of soft tissues and large wound defects. This technique has been employed in plastic surgery, and its efficacy is dependent on the location of the wound and extent of the defect [ 59 , 60 ].…”

“…The reperfusion period, which occurs after ischemia, causes the restoration of blood flow and oxygen influx in the ischemic tissue and can finalize in cellular, inflammatory, and metabolic changes in the living cell. These changes caused by free radicals execute structural and functional alterations in the cell and may contribute to tissue necrosis [5]. This process can be prevented or decelerated with the use of antioxidant drugs that decrease the toxic metabolites responsible for tissue damage.…”
