Effects of acupuncture and electroacupuncture on estradiol-induced inflammation and oxidative stress in health rodents

Abstract: PURPOSE:To investigate the effects of classical acupuncture (Ac) and electroacupuncture (EAc) on estradiol-induced inflammation and oxidative stress in health rodents. METHODS:Twenty-four eight-week old female rats were treated with estradiol valerate (EV) 4.0 mg i.m. single dose and randomly assigned to four groups (n=6): G1(control), G2 (Ac), G3 (EAc 2 Hz) and G4 (EAc 100 Hz). After 60 days all rats were anesthetized with chloral hydrate 10% (0.1 ml/30 g weight of the animal) and submitted to Ac/EAc for twen… Show more

“…Oxidative stress is the result of a disequilibrium of pro‐oxidant and antioxidant systems, which have been well documented in the pathophysiology of CCH‐induced cognitive dysfunction . Acupuncture has proven to have the ability to suppress oxidative stress in many diseases including VD . Our previous study demonstrated that the major ROS‐producing enzyme, NADPH oxidase, was suppressed by acupuncture in VD rats .…”

“…32 Acupuncture has proven to have the ability to suppress oxidative stress in many diseases including VD. 16,33,34 Our previous study demonstrated that the major ROS-producing enzyme, NADPH oxidase, was suppressed by acupuncture in VD rats. 20 In this study, we found that overproduction of ROS and 8-OHdG and SOD inhibitory activity induced by 2VO were reversed by acupuncture treatment.…”

“…Santos et al 13 studies showed decrease of MPO activity when different types of stimulation were used (AC, EAc -2 and 100 Hz). Reducing the activity of MPO using Ac has already been demonstrated in work recently published by Da Silva et al 23 , using an experimental model of peritonitis in mice.…”

“…Doppler ultrasound has shown that acupuncture increases blood flow in treated areas (Lo, Lin, Wei, & Sun, 2013). Finally, thermal imaging shows that acupuncture can decrease inflammation (Santos et al, 2013;Stux, Berman, & Pomeranz, 2000).…”
