Abstract: PURPOSE:To compare sciatic nerve regeneration between non-diabetic (control) and streptozotocin-induced diabetic Wistar rats. METHODS: Four subgroups were evaluated. CN: Non-diabetic rats submitted to neurorrhaphy (n=9); DN: Diabetic rats submitted to neurorrhaphy (n=9); CG: Non-diabetic rats submitted to nerve grafting (n=10); DG: Diabetic rats submitted to nerve grafting (n=9).The nerve regeneration was evaluated by walking track analysis (sciatic functional index), electrophysiological test, histomorphometr… Show more

“…The weight of the triceps surae muscle was used to estimate the degree of muscle‐mass recovery following the atrophy caused by the transient denervation . Instead of using the absolute muscle‐weight value, which may be ineffective due to differences in body mass between the group members, we used the muscle‐mass ratio instead, which was calculated by dividing the experimental side by the control side . In the fibrin conduit group, the muscle‐mass ratio was 41%; it was 71% in the nerve autograft group.…”

“…The regenerated myelinated axons were counted in 12 random standardized area of 10.995 μm2 for each nerve. The value of axonal density adopted as result was the mean of 12 random areas counted and it was expressed in regenerated myelinated axons/10.995 μm 2 …”

“…There were some limitations to this study. Electrophysiological analysis which has been performed in various studies to determine the functional recovery of the rats was not utilized . An electrophysiological test would have been useful in invigorating the functional result obtained in this study.…”

“…The GM was excised from the rats and weighed. Conservation of muscle mass was estimated by calculating the following muscle mass ratio for each animal: muscle mass ratio = % (GM mass on experimental side)/(GM mass on control side) (Salles Jr., Faria, Busnardo, et al, ).…”
