Peroneal nerve reconstruction by using glycerol-preserved veins: histological and functional assessment in rats

Abstract: Glycerol-preserved autogenous or allogeneic veins showed similar results to autograft results. The autogenous vein (without preservation in glycerol) presented histological and functional outcomes statistically lower than other groups.

“…Alongside the development of synthetic tubes to bridge nerve gaps, a search is currently underway for novel nerve guidance conduits. Blood vessels have been widely used as biologic tubes [ 52 , 86 ]. Importantly, even in the past [ 74 ], successful outcomes were achieved with blood vessels as artificial nerve guides.…”

“…For example, sciatic nerve transaction leads to gastrocnemius atrophy. The extent of nerve repair was evaluated by weighing the innervated muscle, a histological analysis of muscle fibers, and immunohistochemical staining of pre-and postsynaptic terminals at nerve muscle synapses [ 34 , 54 , 65 , 86 , 96 , 99 ].…”
