Angiogenesis inhibition by green propolis and the angiogenic effect of L-lysine on bladder cancer in rats

Abstract: PURPOSE:To determine the effects of water-soluble derivative of green propolis in bladder cancer angiogenesis in rats given N-butyl-(-4-hydroxybutyl) nitrosamine (BBN). METHODS:Nine groups were established, where six of them (Groups 1 to 6), the animals received 0.05% BBN in their drinking water for 14 weeks. From the 32nd to the 40th week, Groups 1, 2, 3 and 4 were treated respectively with water, L-lysine (300 mg/kg/ day), celecoxib (30 mg/kg/day) and propolis (300 mg/kg/day). Groups 5 and 6 were given propo… Show more

“…For this, digital images of the CAM were standardized in four quadrants (top, bottom, right and left) corresponding to the region around the filter paper disk containing the tested compounds. Images acquired were analysed by the System Quantification of Angiogenesis (SQAN) as described above [24]. The parameters analysed for angiogenesis quantification included area of neovascularization, vascular length and total number of blood vessels.…”

“…This work is a continuation of earlier studies published by Dornelas et al 7,9 whose objective was to evaluate the effect of green propolis and L-lysine on carcinogenesis and angiogenesis in rats subjected to chemical carcinogenesis of the bladder. In the earlier studies, we found that propolis administered to rats inhibited angiogenesis and bladder carcinogenesis in this model at the doses studied and that L-lysine promoted bladder carcinogenesis.…”

“…Propolis is a resin produced by bees that has various antineoplasic 2 , antiinflammatory 3 , immunomodulatory 4 , antibacterial 5 and antiangiogenesis properties 6,7 . L-lysine is an essential amino acid and has been utilized in the extraction of propolis since the patented proposal of Nicolov et al 8 up to recent publications 2,3,7,9 . The objective of this work was to study the genotoxicity of green propolis and L-lysine on the bone marrow of rats subjected to chemical carcinogenesis of the bladder.…”
