Gel from unripe Musa sapientum peel to repair surgical wounds in rats

Abstract: PuRPOsE: To determine the optimum concentration of a gel obtained from unripe banana (Musa sapientum) peel for wound treatment in rats. METHOds:A randomized triple blind study was conducted with 40 Wistar rats, which were divided into 4 groups: CG, control group; G2%, 2% gel concentration group; G4%, 4% gel concentration group; and G10%, 10 % gel concentration group. The banana peel gel was applied daily, for 7 days, to a 4-cm² wound created on the back of each animal of all groups. After this period, the woun… Show more

“…This may be inferred by comparing the evolution of the wounds at different time points (i.e., at 14, 21 and 28 days of treatment). Other study has evaluated the effect of unripe banana peel gel at a different time interval 1 , suggesting that our findings may also be relevant to the treatment of chronic wounds. Further studies are necessary to confirm the beneficial effects of this gel and extend our results.…”

“…Banana peel is also rich in flavonoids, such as galocatechin and isocyanidine, substances that have anti-inflammatory and antineoplastic activity. Thus, it can play a role in the prevention of inflammatory processes, dissemination of bacteria and tissue repair in animals (Atzingen et al, 2011).…”

“…Thus, in Brazil, its sap is used for treatment of bleeding (Albuquerque et al, 2007). The aqueous extract of the fruit of Musasapientum is used in India for the treatment of wounds (Agarwal et al, 2009;Atzingen, 2011). A species of the same genus (Musa paradisiaca L.) was reported in Brazil for the same properties (Borges et al, 2005).…”
