Analysis of the tensile strength on the healing of the abdominal wall of rats treated with infliximab

Abstract: Purpose:To evaluate the effects of infliximab, a murine/human chimeric monoclonal antibody, on the tensile strength of abdominal wall surgical wounds. Methods: Sixty Wistar healthy male rats with initial body weight between 215 and 390 g and 60 and 90 days of age were randomly assigned into two groups, E (Experimental) and C (Control) with 30 animals each. Group E animals received a single subcutaneous dose of 5mg/Kg of infliximab, and Group C animals received equivalent subcutaneous volume of a solution of 0.… Show more

“…The normal wound healing process consists of three successive and overlapping phases: 1) exudation or acute inflammatory response, occurring mainly from day 1 to 4; 2) proliferation or fibroplasia, from day 4 to 14; and 3) collagen maturation or remodeling, often beginning on day 10 and extending through day 180 9,[14][15][16] . Throughout the three phases, the scar tissue is arranged so that progressive collagen formation and remodeling can be observed [9][10][11][12]16 .…”

“…In order to advance the present stage of surgery, especially plastic surgery, a number of experimental studies are underway that deal with new approaches for improving the process of wound healing [1][2][3][4][5] . Improvements in suture materials and techniques are critical for successful wound closure.…”

“…Dopamine acts as a potent suppressor of the expression of growth factors, which play a crucial role in the healing process 10,18,19 . Therefore, it would be reasonable to expect that dopamine would exert a negative impact on healing, and that blockade of dopamine action, as effected by bromopride and metoclopramide, would be beneficial.…”
