Rapid restoration of colonic goblet cells induced by a hydrolyzed diet containing probiotics in experimental malnutrition

Abstract: Streptococcus thermophilus and Lactobacillus helveticus added to a renutrition diet enhance the recovery of mucosal atrophy induced by malnutrition and especially induce a rapid restoration of goblet cells population in the malnourished colonic mucosa.

“…Study on the organ mass also showed decreased weight in malnourished and malnourished mice infected with Giardia. Interestingly, after nourishing such malnourished mice with protein diet, the body mass, blood parameters and mass of all the pivotal organs were improved [23,30].…”

“…Malnutrition per se can also increase lamina propria populations of macrophages and lymphocytes along with increased proinflammatory cytokines, which may further alter intestinal barrier function 118,129 . In addition, malnutrition may compromise innate immune barriers, Paneth cell defensins, and goblet cell mucins, the last having been shown to be ameliorated by probiotic interventions 146 …”

“…For instance, the administration of a multi-strain probiotic preparation containing L. helveticus strain LAT 179 to broiler chickens caused an increase in body weight and serum albumin levels, an increase in serum levels of minerals (i.e., calcium and potassium), a decrease in triglyceride levels and an improved antioxidant status (Capcarova et al, 2011). In another study, the administration of an aproteic diet with L. helveticus Bionan (Nestlé, Brazil) in combination with S. thermophilus protected the colonic mucosa of mice by counteracting the effect of malnutrition and restoring the number of goblet cells (Dock-Nascimento et al, 2007). Analogously, the same probiotic preparation administered to mice in pre- and post-operative periods stimulated the immune system, increased the production of serum IgA and increased colonic weight (Aguilar-Nascimento et al, 2006).…”
