Considerations that may influence the result of trials assessing tensile strength in experimental surgery

Abstract: The utilization of a mechanical test machine is a useful tool in the assessment of materials' strength, providing accurate results. Nevertheless the trials must be well structured analyzing the multiple variables so as to attain a pattern of constant reproducibility and to provide the necessary reliability.

“…Among these parameters, measurement of tensile strength is particularly relevant in cases of intervention through the abdominal wall, because tensile strength testing provides accurate and prompt results and reflects the reality of clinical practice, in which a pulling force is exerted on the surgical wound whenever patients contract their abdomen 9,11,13 . reflect interference in some stage of the wound healing process.…”

“…The breaking strength of the anastomosis provides rapid, accurate and reproducible results 36 . In this study, no significant differences between groups were found, but the values in group III (pneumoperitoneum before laparotomy and after laparorrhaphy)…”

“…This method of measuring tensile strength provides accurate results, but it is dependent on correct and precise fixation of the anastomosis. 8 All the anastomoses were performed in the same exact location with at least 3 cm of tissue in each side of the anastomotic line (base of the penis and prostate) to allow precise fixation. The custom-designed cryogrip clamps have been previously used by our group for fixation of soft tissues, and the cryogrip clamps demonstrated the most consistent way to measure soft tissue mechanics by the consistent indentations of the grip to the tissue after finalization of testing.…”
