Abstract: PURPOSE: To study the ganglion cells (GC) in the terminal bowel of rats with ethylenethiourea (ETU) induced anorectal malformations (ARM). METHODS: The animals were divided into three groups: Group A - normal fetuses from pregnant rats that were not administered ETU; Group B - fetuses without ARM born from pregnant rats that were administered ETU and Group C - fetuses with ARM born from pregnant rats that received ETU. ETU was administered on the 11th day of pregnancy at the dose of 125 mg/kg body weight by ga… Show more

“…In this modified model, 65% of ARMs were induced by ADR, not even close to previous results using 2 or 3 doses of ADR [3][4][5] . Our results are similar to experimental model of ARMs ethylenethiourea induced [10][11][12][13] . The mean weight of the fetuses of dams who received ADR was less than the fetuses of dams who received FA + ADR.…”

“…A randomized laboratory trial was conducted using female Wistar rats from the animal colony of Federal University of San Francisco Valley. On the 11 th day of pregnancy, by means of gavage, the experimental group was administered 1% ETU at a dose of 125 mg/kg (12.5 ml/kg) and the control group was administered 0.9% physiological solution at a volume of 12.5 ml/ kg 8 .…”

“…In an ETU-inducible model, it was observed a decrease in density of ganglion cells and interstitial cells of Cajal in the terminal bowel of rats with anorectal malformations. 28,29 Furthermore, in another study, abnormalities throughout the digestive tract were found, such as a decrease of nerve plexus associated with muscle layer atrophy in rat fetus. 30 The incidence of ARM in the ETU model was 71%.…”

“…[20][21][22][23] Adriamycin: A single dose of adriamycin (6 mg/kg intraperitoneally on gestational day 8) was able to induce a reproducible ARM and other malformations such as limb and facial defects. [24][25][26][27][28][29][30] In our laboratory, using rats as an animal model, some research projects were developed. In an ETU-inducible model, it was observed a decrease in density of ganglion cells and interstitial cells of Cajal in the terminal bowel of rats with anorectal malformations.…”
