Abstract: PURPOSE: To compare the efficacy and safety of a low molecular weight heparin (enoxaparin) with unfractionated heparin (UH) in this prophylaxis. METHODS: Seventy five patients (59 men and 16 women), undergoing major lower extremity amputation (30 above-knee and 45 below-knee), were randomized to be treated with subcutaneous UH (5,000 IU t.i.d.) or enoxaparin (40mg/day) during hospitalization. Prophylaxis was started 12 hours before surgery or, in emergency cases, in the first postoperative day. RESULTS: The tw… Show more

“…[109][110][111][112][113][114][115][116] Most enrolled patients undergoing diverse vascular procedures, but two studied patients undergoing aortic surgery, 109,115 and one enrolled patients undergoing lower-extremity amputation. 116 Three studies compared LDUH (with or without IPC) to no prophylaxis, one compared aspirin to no prophylaxis, and three compared LDUH to LMWH. One study compared LDUH, LDUH plus ergotamine, and dextran.…”

“…UFH, 5000 IU b.i.d. and enoxaparin, 40 mg daily showed comparable efficacy in the prevention of VTE [61]. However, in patients undergoing lower extremity amputation following complications of the ischemic vascular diseases UFH as VTE prophylaxis did not show any significant different effect compared with placebo [55].…”
