“…Skeletal muscle ischemia for 6 h does not determine significant morphological or biochemical changes, but reperfusion injury had a greater magnitude than the ischemia injury. [1][2][3] Observations during reperfusion skeletal muscle have revealed a significant increase in the number of neutrophiles adhering to the endothelium following ischemia compared with non-ischemic control. This increase in neutrophil adhesion was seen during the first initial minutes of reperfusion.…”

“…Ischemia-reperfusion (I-R) injury refers to the cellular damage that takes place in oxygen-deprived tissue upon reperfusion. [1][2][3] Skeletal muscle is sensitive to I-R and shows progressive morphological and functional impairment as the ischemic insult is increased. I-R injury becomes a significant limiting factor in the successful outcome of the surgical treatment of ischemic skeletal muscle, especially in cases of crushing trauma or major limb replantation.…”

“…3 Renal insult is mostly related to the magnitude and duration of ischemia, leading to edema and tubule obstruction, mainly after reperfusion, and impaired glomerular filtration. 4 Oxigen free radicals play an important role in the metabolic events involved on ischemic reperfusion insult [5][6][7] , as well as neutrophil recruitment and tubular adhesion, all of them intimately related in the early inflammatory phase 8,9 .…”

“…Several procedures have been used to prevent oxidative damage, and particularly α‐tocoferol administration. α‐tocoferol is one of the major antioxidants in the body and has a particularly important role in protecting cell membranes at an early stage of free radical attack through its free radical‐quenching activity 11…”
